There is a lot of new music, and OndaRock's Spotify playlists are the map we offer to help you trace routes between recent record releases. This month, like every month, our editors offer you a taste of rock in transformation, the atmospheres of the most current pop, the pulsations of electronics, the stories of songwriting, the ideas of experimental music, the nuances of jazz, the talent of the Italian scene and a dive into darker and more intense sounds. A practical and hopefully intriguing way to discover some of the most interesting – but not necessarily the most prominent – releases of the moment. Happy listening.
Rock and surroundings
New music from Model/Actriz (second album released May 2), Turnstile (album coming early June), Ty Segall, Arcade Fire, Viagra Boys, Momma, Postcards, Deafheaven and many more. We have something for all tastes from the frenetic world of “rock and surroundings” (Claudio Lancia)
Pop Music
While historic groups announce their return (Pulp, Stereolab), Addison Rae looks for a new viral song and Alison Goldfrapp tries the solo path again: will it be better this time? Meanwhile Billy Woods continues to churn out excellent singles and Maria Somerville has made one dream-pop record of the year… (Daniel Moore)
Dark corner
We start with the crest dark of the month, a song taken from the surprising album of the Sardinian muse Dalila Kayros. The new features included in the playlist do not end here: a new single for Marilyn Manson (dealing with a successful Phil Collins cover), the good intuitions of ChalkCrush Of Souls and French band Blind Delon and then again the return of Disturbator and of Rhys Fulber (here in league with Qual). In the corner dedicated to extreme metal, the Romans Svnth appear with their evolved and inspired post-black metal. (Paolo Chemnitz)
Electronics
Those by Barker, Djrum, DJ Koze, Sandwell District (Record of the month of April on OndaRock) and Kassian are some of the albums of the moment on the circuit electro international. Before them you can listen to the new singles for Avalon Emerson and Bambii. After them a sequence of excellent female productions: Marie Davidson, Yaeji, Amelie Lens, Charlotte De Witte, Aya, FKA Twigs, Ela Minus, Rose Gray and Oklou. For dancing, but not only. (Claudio Lancia)
Songwriter
This month's playlist is dedicated to Lana Del Rey and her next album: with a single like “Henry, come on” we expect great things again! (Daniel Moore)
Other sounds
Among the new features, the brilliant return of Kara-Lis Coverdale, our current Record of the Month, stands out. Of note are the long-distance debut of Sara Persico – among the monthly section choices – and the good performance of Lucio Leonardi aka Pluhm, the not too convincing returns of Yann Tiersen and The Album Leaf, as well as the new chapter of the Earthphonia series produced by Max Casacci. On the list we also offer you extracts from the upcoming albums of Nils Frahm, Goldmund and Lyra Pramuk. (Peppe Trotta)
Italy
A/lpaca, Fulminacci, Giorgio Poi and Duo Onirico Sonoro open the selection dedicated to the best Italian artists, followed by recent publications by Messa, I Cani, Populous and Gaia Banfi. The group is made up of interesting female voices, from La Nina to Giungla, from Joan Thiele to Laura Agnusdei from Giulia Impache to Angela Baraldi. Happy listening. (Claudio Lancia)
Jazz
Between releases expected soon (GoGo Penguin, Calibro 35, Maurice Louca) and recent novelties (Phresoul, Daniel Herskedal, Knats, Erlend Apneseth), the month is full of possible discoveries. The resulting map is large and irregular, with a predilection for border areas: from the most contaminated nu jazz to fusion drifts, from voices that broaden the lexicon of jazz starting from other geographical and cultural contexts to intersections with the traditional. On the other hand, it is precisely from the margins that the pressures through which language renews itself most often come. (Marco Sgrignoli)
