The comparison with those records, inevitably, is challenging. Glocky he absorbs that imagery well, but does not yet reach the naturalness and expressive freedom of the artists who inspired him. More than a copy, however, Freestyle it seems like an Italian reinterpretation of that language, a first step towards a direction that in our country is still to be built. And it is precisely this desire to experiment that makes the project interesting, even when not everything works perfectly.

A change of direction that can divide fans

Who he met Glocky at the time of Northside Melodies or the collective Square Kids you might be surprised. The atmospheres closest to previous works leave room for a record built almost entirely on sonic impact.

The productions are the real strong point of the album. Each beat accompanies Glocky with personality, building a precise and recognizable sonic identity. Aggressive synths, heavy bass and changes in atmosphere always make listening energetic.

Over the course of the album some productions tend to resemble each other and the feeling of repetition emerges in some passages, but without compromising the overall quality of the project.

Where the record leaves something on the table is in the writing. The texts almost always aim for immediate impact and are at times rather essential. In an album that dares a lot from a sonic point of view, it would have been interesting to find some more memorable bars or images capable of leaving a greater mark.

The best tracks and featuring

Despite a sufficient overall rating, Freestyle contains several episodes that manage to stand out. Work is probably the highest point of the album: the featuring with Gué it works perfectly and demonstrates how the Milanese rapper manages to naturally adapt even to sounds far from his usual repertoire.

Among the most convincing tracks there are also AcTiNG wEiRD And LaMiaBeastietwo songs that represent the identity of the project well. Here the productions find the right balance with the interpretation of Glockyshowing what this artistic path could become with greater maturity.

Also Tony Effe manages to fit into the album without being out of context and the featurings, overall, are one of the most successful aspects of the album. Where instead Freestyle loses something is in continuity: next to the best songs there are less inspired episodes such as Fruitella, Narco$ And Try againwhich end up making listening difficult and confirm a certain discontinuity in the quality of the project.
