Who is the greatest drummer in rock history? The British online magazine BBC Classical Music asked itself this, publishing a ranking that brings together 33 absolute protagonists of the instrument, across over half a century of music, from classic rock to punk, from progressive to grunge to metal.
The ranking does not just reward technique. The criteria taken into consideration also include musical personality, the ability to build a groove unmistakable, the sense of time, the stylistic originality and the resistance necessary to sustain live performances of the highest level. The goal is to celebrate those musicians who transformed the drums from a simple accompaniment to a true creative engine of the band.
At the top of the ranking we therefore find John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, described as a drummer capable of combining devastating power with timing impeccable and with a unique expressiveness. According to the magazine, Bonham didn't just play: he transformed the drums into a force of nature, redefining the standards of rock. A choice that is also reflected in other authoritative rankings published in recent years. Both Rolling Stone and Consequence had in fact crowned Bonham as the greatest rock drummer of all time, confirming an almost unanimous consensus among critics and musicians.
Behind him we find another British legend, Keith Moon of the Who, famous for his explosive and unpredictable style, while the podium is completed by Neil Peart of Rush, considered the greatest interpreter of progressive drums thanks to his technical precision and the extraordinary complexity of his rhythmic compositions. Among the names present there are also giants such as Buddy Rich, Ginger Baker, Ringo Starr, Stewart Copeland, Charlie Watts, Ian Paice, Danny Carey, Dave Grohl, Bill Bruford, Mike Portnoy, Nick Mason, Travis Barker, Lars Ulrich and many others, testifying to the extraordinary variety of styles that have marked the history of rock.
