The blistering noon heat is close to a hundred degrees, but the boys swarming the soccer arena seem to move with extra pace in their step. One-touch passing, feinting and ripping hard shots into a tattered net, each is super-charged by vivid daydreams of glory on the international stage. Despite the prevalence of armed gangs that control vast swathes of the capital and growing parts of the countryside, the Haitian national football team is playing in its first World Cup in 52 years — an improbable feat of resilience that's given people something to celebrate amid one of the most…
Slam poetry and jazz music, spirituality and rhythmic sinuosity, corrosive lyrics and refined hip-hop and soul sounds: in Aja Monet's second album there is all this, but also more. “The Color Of Rain” is not just a record, but also an atypical and at times surreal combination of psychedelia, jazz, black music and words, marked with a persuasive musicality and with an incisiveness that goes hand in hand with the invectives against the current American system. In “The Color Of Rain” words become music and music becomes words. Aja Monet's new album has the advantage, compared to her debut, of…

We have Amazon to thank (or blame) for completely transforming the way we shop. The e-commerce giant’s virtually endless product selection, massive inventory, and ultra-fast delivery options have made everything from streaming movies to ordering groceries from Whole Foods as easy as clicking a button. While Amazon excels in convenience and variety, that same abundance can be overwhelming. Sifting through dozens of near-identical products can lead to decision fatigue, leaving many consumers frustrated or simply burned out. That’s…

Wembley Stadium has confirmed a rule change for Harry Styles’ show tomorrow amid an extreme heatwave in the UK. The former One Direction singer is due to continue his record-breaking ‘Together, Together’ residency at the venue tomorrow night (June 23), with Shania Twain once again appearing as a special guest. The show is still set to go ahead as planned, but Wembley has relaxed its usual water bottle policy due to the severe warm weather expected in the capital. While metal bottles are not usually permitted inside the stadium, guests will be allowed to bring metal or hard plastic water bottles to Tuesday’s show, where they can be filled at free refill…
Canada’s Angine de Poitrine were among the guests on last night’s (June 21) episode of Later… With Jools Holland. The masked math rock duo broke out all their signature trappings—uncanny choreography, microtonal riffs, and lots and lots of polka dots—for a performance of “Fabienk,” from their new EP, Vol. II. Also, have you noticed that their guitarist (that’s Khn de Poitrine to you; the drummer is Klek) plays barefoot? ’Cause I sure didn’t—until today.Last night’s other performers included Arlo Parks, Sam Smith, and Shania Twain. Holland himself hopped behind the piano to accompany Twain, who covered Hank Williams’ “I’m So…
