The Rolling Stones have released “Divine Intervention”, one of the two songs from “Foreign Tongues” featuring Robert Smith of the Cure. The curious collaboration, described by Mick Jagger during the presentation of the new album, was born almost by chance. “I saw this guy in the studio, from behind, with a long robe on,” Jagger recalled. “When he turned around he was completely covered in lipstick. I'd never met him before and I said, 'But you're Robert Smith from The Cure!'. He said, 'Yes!'” Once the initial embarrassment was overcome, the two began to converse and Jagger saw fit to immediately involve him in the conversation session of the new Rolling Stones album. “So I told him, 'Since you're here, you might as well do something.' Sometimes collaborations work like that. Go in and sing the backing vocals.” From this unpredictable collaboration “Divine Intervention” was born, one of the two songs on the album in which the frontman of the band “Pornography“. At first listen, however, its presence might go unnoticed: the reason is simple. Smith does not sing on the song, but plays guitar, as confirmed by the album's official credits.
Together with “Divine Intervention”, the Rolling Stones also released the new single “Jealous Lover”, accompanied by a video clip starring actors Anya Taylor-Joy and Charles Melton.
“Jealous Lover” brings the group back to their rhythm'n'blues roots, in a song characterized by Mick Jagger's falsetto and immediate melodies. Alongside Jagger, the song features Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood on guitars, Darryl Jones on bass and Steve Jordan on drums and percussion. Guests include Steve Winwood, who contributes Rhodes piano and organ, while Andrew Watt and Matt Clifford complete the band with further instrumental contributions and arrangements.
“Foreign Tongues”, the band's new album, will be released on July 10th.
