The actor will play a washed-up golf pro whose son might surpass his legacy if he doesn’t lock in soon
In the first trailer for the upcoming Netflix series The Hawk, Will Ferrell wants to go out on top. The comedian steps into the role of Lonnie Hawkins, a pro-golfer whose legacy shined a little brighter before he grew older, weirder, and pretty bad at his job. Not wanting to put his glory days behind him just yet, he sets his sights on a comeback for the ages. “I still am a big shot golfer,” he says. “I just need to get my groove back.”
Lonnie has plenty stacked against him, not least of all his own son, who is inching closer to surpassing his status in the golf world — people are even starting to call him The Hawk, a torch that had to have been pried out of his father’s hand. “Stop saying LeBron and Bronny, this isn’t a LeBron and Bronny situation,” his son argues. Lonnie has to lock in if he wants to find his way back to the top, even if just for one last hurrah.
Out July 16, The Hawk also stars Molly Shannon, Jimmy Tatro, Fortune Feimster, Luke Wilson, Chris Parnell, Katelyn Tarver, and David Hornsby.
The series continues Ferrell’s relationship with Netflix, which premiered his road trip documentary Will & Harper in 2024. Earlier this year, the actor revealed plans to create a Broadway adaptation of Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, the Netflix film he co-wrote and co-starred in.
The Hawk marks the first television series Ferrell has starred in since 2021, when he played an anxious psychiatric patient in Apple TV+’s The Shrink Next Door. The actor also has a number of films on the horizon, including Judgement Day and The Fifth Wheel, which is also slated for a Netflix release.
