A concert without an audience, immersed in the silence and suggestion of the ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheater of Pompeii. A fusion of the ancient location archaeological and psychedelic rock. This is the idea behind “Pink Floyd Live At Pompei MCMLXXII”, the film directed by Adrian Maben in October 1971 that Rai Cultura will broadcast on Wednesday 24 June at 00.20 on Rai 5 in a completely restored version, with the original audio tracks remastered.
Filmed in a unique context, with only the presence of the crew and excavation workers, the film captures Pink Floyd in a dimension suspended in time, transforming the archaeological site into an extraordinary stage. The encounter between the monumentality of ancient Pompeii and the sound experimentation of the British band gave life to a work destined to become a point of reference in the history of filmed rock. A few weeks later, Maben also filmed the group in the Abbey Road studios during the first working sessions of “The Dark Side Of The Moon”, enriching the documentary with images that testify to the birth of one of the most famous albums in the history of music.
The recordings of the concert remained unreleased in official form until 2025. Previously they had only circulated through unauthorized bootlegs, while some tracks from the documentary were included in 2016 in the collection “The Early Years 1965–1972”. In 2025 the film was meticulously restored, frame by frame, starting from the original 35mm negative, found in five reels in the band's archives. This discovery has brought to light the original images shot during those torrid days in the ruins of Pompeii, more than 50 years ago.
Led by Lana Topham, Director of Restoration for Pink Floyd, the team worked to preserve the integrity and beauty of the original film. The film was digitized in 4K using advanced techniques to achieve maximum image quality. Colors have been enhanced and each frame has been meticulously reviewed and repaired, maintaining a natural and vivid look with minimal intervention on the original grain.
The audio quality has also been dramatically improved with a new theatrical mix and home entertainment made by Steven Wilson in 5.1 and Dolby Atmos, which enhances the depth and clarity of the sound, respecting the authenticity and spirit of the original 1972 version. Wilson's goal was to faithfully recreate the sound of the band in those fiery days of 1971.
The album “Pink Floyd At Pompeii – MCMLXXII” was released for the first time as a complete live album. The 2025 remix by Steven Wilson was made available in CD, LP Blu-Ray, DVD, Digital Audio and Dolby Atmos formats. And it was in 2025 that Adrian Maben, the Scottish director who transformed the Pompeii amphitheater into a sanctuary of psychedelic rock with the legendary “Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii” left us. Maben's camera transformed the ancient arena into a contemporary temple, where every shot was a painting, every note an engraving on the walls of the past. The link between Maben and Pompeii was not limited to the camera: the director periodically returned to the ruins, in love with the place and its history, so much so that he earned honorary citizenship in 2015. A poetic consecration for those who knew how to elevate the Vesuvian city to a global icon of contemporary music and culture.
