“La Divina Commedia” (2023) closed a chapter in the career of the Genoese trapper Tedua, leading him to a commercial triumph also guaranteed by the version deluxedriven by the song “Beatrice” (2024) paired with Annalisa. Then we lost track of him a bit, except for a few featuring. In October last year, a video clip revealed the rapper's first concert at San Siro, scheduled for June 24. To accompany this event, this “Ryan Ted” arrives on May 22nd mixtapes a little messy but true that brings to mind the sound practiced at the beginning.
The songs flow fast, aggressive but always controlled. “Rap Legend” is a self-celebration with a robotic voice and “Faxxx” (feat. Latrelle) is a nursery rhyme that could date back to 2016.
As in a training circuit in the gym, “Uno+Gangsta” (feat. Nerissima Serpe) continues to pump hard, while “Mai” relaxes into a sweeter melancholy. Then we start sweating again with “Felpa nera” (feat. Anna) and the load lightens in “Too Late”. It is useless to continue along the entire setlist, of sixteen songs.
We point out other nursery rhymes (“Hoola hop” with Ernia) and potential pop-rap a bit from Dargen D'Amico (“Volare”, “Gli anni”, “Blue” which takes up “Purple”), leaving out several approximate passages.
There is also space to pay tribute to his inspirations in “Veliero di carta”, dedicated “to all the artists who raised me” and an interesting “Letter to Tedua”, where he is naked in front of the listener. He addresses the criticisms leveled against him, often harshly:
Tedua is a meme, Tedua can't sing
Tedua thinks he's being an intellectual
[…]
And Tedua isn't on time, he doesn't even have the talent
He doesn't know what he's doing, he just likes it because it's beautiful
[…]
Fuck you, you look like you're high on coke, Tedua
I swear, you've sold yourself to the system a little
“Ryan Ted” is a mixtapes who wants to demonstrate that Tedua is ready for the big concert scheduled in Milan. Like his early works it is naive, messy and made from the heart. Certainly once could have been enough, in a scene in full development and from a newcomer or little more. After three years, in a context of general tiredness for certain sounds and certain messages, it is more difficult to assign the fateful passing grade. It's a shame, because here and there it's clear that the talent is there and could shine even without the excessive pretentiousness of the previous album. Curious to say but, perhaps, a little more time was needed.
