Green Day arrive at the cinema with “Nimrods”, a wild coming-of-age comedy on the road inspired by the early years of the American band and its adventures on tour, when Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool crossed the United States in a van, long before the worldwide success of “Dookie”. The film will be in theaters around the world from August 11th to 18th as a special cinematic event, with an introduction by Green Day themselves and, at the end of the screening, exclusive live images recorded at the Palladium in Los Angeles. The band also appears in the film and is among the producers of the project. Below is the official trailer.
The story
At the center of the story is Tommy, played by Mason Thames, a young musician who receives a phone call with seemingly incredible news: his band has been chosen to open Green Day's New Year's concert. In reality it is a prank cooked up by his older brother Wayne, played by Keen Ruffalo. Tommy, however, believes it and, convinced that he is faced with the opportunity of a lifetime, steals his brother's car and leaves with his companions from Kansas City towards Los Angeles, with the aim of reaching the city in three days. Thus begins a chaotic journey across America, freely inspired by the experience of Green Day's first tours and their original DIY attitude.
Written and directed by Lee Kirk and premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, “Nimrods” stars Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, Ryan Foust, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio, Keen Ruffalo, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee, Sean Gunn and Mckenna Grace, as well as Green Day themselves. The film is produced by Tim Perell for Process, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool, while Ryan Kroft, Michael Rapino and Jonathan Daniel serve as executive producers.
New song
On the occasion of the announcement, Green Day also released a new song, “I'm Never Gonna RIP”, accompanied by the related video and already available on digital platforms. The song appears in the film over the closing credits and will be part of the official soundtrack.
There soundtrack includes 30 tracks, including 22 Green Day songs chosen from across their career. In addition to “I'm Never Gonna RIP,” four previously unreleased live recordings from the band's performance at the Palladium in Los Angeles will be featured, along with songs from The Paradox, Ultra Q and Mckenna Grace. The collection is completed by four tracks by Analog Dogs, the fictitious band protagonist of the story.
The title “Nimrods” naturally recalls “Nimrod”, the album released by Green Day in 1997. The film version will be presented in 4K and the screenings will be completed by the band's introduction and exclusive live performances recorded at the Palladium.
