Neil Young turned 80 on November 12th. To celebrate, the online magazine Stereogum asked 80 musicians to choose their favorite song from its catalogue. One for each year of an unrepeatable career.
“Young's legacy – underlines Ryan Leas in the introduction – is not only in songwriting, but in independence: seminal guitarist, unbreakable author, activist, non-conformist. For today's artists he represents a model of integrity: not bowing to the industry, following instinct, using one's voice with responsibility”.
In the operation, Stereogum involved prominent names on the international scene, including Michael Stipe (Rem), Jeff Tweedy (Wilco), Matt Berninger (The National), Frank Black (Pixies), Robyn Hitchcock, Julia Holter, Tom Morello, David Pajo (Slint), Emma Ruth Rundle and many others.

Neil Young, meanwhile, has announced the publication of a new edition for the 50th anniversary of the 1975 classic “Tonight's The Night”, enriched by six previously unreleased songs recorded during the original sessions, including “Raised On Robbery” featuring Joni Mitchell.
The reissue will be available from November 28th in digital, CD and vinyl formats, also in a special transparent vinyl version that can already be pre-ordered.
Among the new tracks stand out a never-released version of “Lookout Joe” and a different arrangement of “Walk On”, later re-recorded for the 1974 album “On The Beach”, recorded at Young's Broken Arrow Ranch.
“Tonight's The Night” represented the third chapter of the so-called “ditch trilogy”, the “abandonment” trilogy with which Young reacted to the multi-million dollar success of “Harvest” (1972) through three darker and more experimental records: “Time Fades Away” (1973), “On The Beach” (1974) and indeed “Tonight's The Night”. The latter was largely recorded in 1973 at SIR Studios in Los Angeles, featuring Nils Lofgren on guitar, Ben Keith on pedal steeland Crazy Horse's rhythm section, Billy Talbot (bass) and Ralph Molina (drums), with additional contributions recorded at Broken Arrow Ranch.
All the bonus tracks included in the new edition come from the sessions at SIR Studios, a period in which Young was mourning the overdose deaths of Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten and roadies group historian, Bruce Berry. The latter is explicitly mentioned in the song that gives the album its title, also presented here in a rare version take alternative. Some of the new pieces had already appeared in the past on Young's official website or in the “Archives Vol. II” box set.
Young had begun collaborating with Talbot and Molina as early as 1969 with “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere”. Lofgren had first appeared on “After The Gold Rush” (1970), while Ben Keith was among the musicians on “Harvest”. Lofgren would later join a new incarnation of Crazy Horse alongside Talbot and Molina.
