Physics Universal Love Language, the second album by Syrian-Armenian-American singer Káryyn, is tuned to 432hz, a standard that is, according to new age adherents, more in line with the hum of the universe. Promotional materials place her music “at the intersection of sound, spirit, and physics,” which sets the barrier for entry intimidatingly high. But it’s worth waving away the palo santo smoke because in clearer air, Physics Universal Love Language is an album of immediate pleasures, lavished with sharp hooks and melodramatic flourishes readily accessible in this dimension. The positioning makes a little more sense in the context of Káryyn’s…
The first voice you hear on Sublime’s first record, 1992’s 40oz. to Freedom, belongs to Minutemen’s D. Boon. The last voice you hear on their last record, 1996’s Sublime, belongs to the Beastie Boys’ Ad-Rock. During its brief existence, the Long Beach trio treated squeaky South Bay punk and bratty white-boy hip-hop as the unlikely boundaries of their sampledelic dirtbag reggae. Though the music was caked in a house-party muck of stepped-on pizza, spilled bong water, and wetsuit sand, it was rooted in suffering and addiction—having a real bad time and trying to party through it. Put them on while…
When Kelsey Lu sought a backdrop for the short film accompanying their second album, they landed on Lanzarote, a mountainous island in the Canary Islands of Spain. Blackened with volcanic rock and encircled by towering waves, the tumultuous scenery makes a vivid psychic landscape for So Help Me God, a rambling spell of ’70s-era soul and exuberant orchestral folk-pop that sweeps through the fog of heartbreak and the clarity of self-discovery. Filled with lyrics that figure the world as place both vast and small, the album is the kind of monument to deeply felt emotion that fans of Ana Roxanne,…

Morrissey’s representatives have reportedly had a parody list of his enemies taken down after it went viral online. A post emerged in recent days purporting to be from the Morrissey Central blog, the site on which the singer and former Smiths frontman regularly posts. Titled ‘The Malefactors’, it contained a long list of public figures, with the suggestion that it came from Morrissey himself and was a way for him to get back at his enemies. It was shared far and wide, but has now been taken down, with the satirical Instagram account MozPosting admitting that they were behind it. They revealed that Morrissey’s team had contacted them and requested its…
Mannarino is back with a new album, First Loveyet another chapter in a songwriting career that has brought intense and experienced world music to Italy. The album tells of a primordial love, and more, and the artist told it to our microphones starting from the cover. “The cover is a painting that I bought and that excites me, there are these two characters who are taken by a light with an ascent and various beings all around. It is a painting that cannot be explained well, it was chosen for emotional reasons and not strictly linked to the music.” Mannarino…

Dimartino returns as a soloist with The unlikely flood of the Oretoa concept album that tells of his Sicily and in particular Palermo, through the river that crosses the city. We met him for a video interview, after the years of sharing stages with Colapesce and the return to the form with which he began his career. The conversation opens with the question from which the whole album starts: what it means to be Sicilian. “It means many things, at the same time it means not being able to get out of it. If you are born Sicilian that thing…
