Lauryn Hill returned to talk about the reasons why, after the success of her dazzling debut The Miseducation of Lauryn Hillnever released a second studio album. The musician responded online to a discussion that arose on social media around her long recording absence, contesting some reconstructions that have circulated over the years and offering a broader reflection on the relationship between creativity, the music industry and public pressure.
“When you're inspired and trying to stay true to your principles, it can't be said enough how much it can drain you,” Hill wrote, referring to the emotional and creative weight of success. “Many see opportunities only in economic terms,” he underlined, explaining that finding a safe space in which to create “with integrity” has become increasingly difficult.
In his speech, Hill also recalled the context in which both were born The Score of the Fugees is his solo debut: «We fought for every inch», he wrote, explaining that those works were not created because the industry was ready to welcome them, but thanks to a continuous confrontation with the music system.
