The Indonesian scene is no longer a surprise for those who regularly frequent the most extreme forms of death metal. What initially may have seemed like little more than a meme – the infamous “come to Indonesia” under any social post by a band on the rise – quickly turned into a concrete, pulsating movement, supported by a widespread network of bands, labels and fans who testify to an authentic hunger for oppressive and uncompromising sounds. Vile Desolation fits into this context, signed by the now historic US label Comatose Music and now making their long-distance debut with “Annihilating The Consciousness”.
The album is placed in a well-defined territory but not without nuances: a so-called brutal death metal that oscillates between technical tensions and more direct and muscular impulses. What is striking from the first listens is the trio's ability to avoid the two extremes that often afflict certain fringes of the genre. On the one hand, we never fall into a sterile and self-referential technicality typical of the more tech and virtuous side; on the other hand, we also shy away from that excessively ignorant and slam-oriented approach which, if abused, risks flattening every dynamic. The fulcrum of the album is undoubtedly the guitar work: the themes appear as living structures, in continuous transformation. Guitarist Hendika Dwi Prasetyo demonstrates a discreet ability in linking tight, almost labyrinthine passages with groovier and heavier openings, often with a pleasant roundness, creating an ups and downs and a dynamic balance that keep the attention high throughout the entire duration of the album. On more than one occasion, ideas emerge which, while obviously remaining faithful to the typical language of the genre, are vaguely memorable upon first listening – a detail not to be taken for granted in such an often difficult area. The rhythm section follows and supports this approach with precision, with the drums alternating incessant bursts and more full-bodied thrusts, helping to give body and depth to the compositions, without limiting themselves to an ancillary role. The result is a sound flow that runs, twists and recomposes continuously, playing on well-managed contrasts between frenzy and impact, according to a plot that may recall Vomit The Soul or Defeated Sanity's “Disposal of the Dead”, conducted from EP to full-length format.
Despite moving within a notoriously sectarian genre and not inclined to welcome occasional listeners, Vile Desolation therefore demonstrate that they possess a clear vision and a sure hand. The group certainly doesn't have in mind to revolutionize the trend, but they tackle it with intelligence and participation, avoiding that feeling of detachment that often characterizes colder or overly calculated productions. On the contrary, here we perceive a genuine involvement, a desire to play this music before even demonstrating it. As mentioned, the writing holds up well even over the long haul, a sign of an already solid compositional maturity for a debut.
Ultimately, it can be said that “Annihilating The Consciousness” is a solid and convincing debut, which further confirms the vitality of the Indonesian scene and which presents a band capable of being both devoted fans and conscious architects of their own sound. For fans of the genre, a listen that is anything but negligible.
