Stevie Wonder is preparing to return with a new album of unreleased songs, his first in over two decades. The American musician announced “Through The Eyes Of Wonder”, expected in 2027, revealing the news during a performance in Los Angeles. “I will release 'Through The Eyes Of Wonder' next year. I will also add four songs that I was working on at the time of the 'Songs In The Key Of Life' album,” Wonder said from the stage, without providing further details on the tracklist or recording sessions for the moment.
The album will therefore interrupt a long recording break: Wonder's last studio album, “A Time To Love”, dates back to 2005 and was published by Motown. By the time the new work is released, 22 years will have passed.
Particularly significant is the recovery of the four songs dating back to the period of “Songs In The Key Of Life”, a masterpiece published in 1976 which celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year. The result of approximately two years of work and created with the contribution of over 130 musicians, including Herbie Hancock and George Benson, the album includes some of Wonder's most famous songs, from “Sir Duke” to “As” and “Isn't She Lovely”. “Songs In The Key Of Life” has over time become one of the fundamental titles in the history of soul and R&B, as well as one of the musician's greatest commercial successes, obtaining diamond certification in the United States.
At 76 years old, Stevie Wonder thus adds a new chapter to a career that began in the early 1960s and is full of awards: 25 Grammy Awards, over 100 million records sold worldwide and an Oscar won in 1985 for “I Just Called To Say I Love You”, awarded as best original song for the film “The Lady in Red”.
