After four years of recording silence, Matteo Faustini returns with a new single. Is called We were born freecomes out on Friday 29 May on the radio and on all digital platforms, and is the first step in a new path after the Sanremo Festival and the two albums released in recent years.
There have been years in which Faustini he didn't really stop: he continued to play live, on Italian stages, building a relationship with those who follow him which has become the basis of this return. What changes is the perspective of this new song.
“We were born free” was born in the Canton Mombello prison in Brescia
We were born free was born inside a prison, after eight months of working with the inmates of the Canton Mombello Penitentiary Institute in Brescia. AND Matteo Faustini himself to tell it:
“'We were born free' is a song born in prison that I wrote after 8 months of working with the inmates of the Penitentiary Institute of Canton Mombello in Brescia. Listening to their stories and their mistakes led me to write a song that talks about second chances, about change, about rebirth. This song doesn't save lives, but it gives hope.”
Being in contact with those who have lost physical freedom, Faustini he recognized another, less visible imprisonment: the mental one, created by the judgment of others and by the feelings of guilt that everyone creates on their own. From there the song takes another direction, more personal, which concerns everyone, even outside the bars.
The verses of the liturgy and the conflict with feelings of guilt
The piece revolves around a reflection that Matteo Faustini exposes without filters: the religious dogmas and guilt that many of us grew up with. The passage explicitly quotes phrases from the liturgy of the Church, from “my fault, my fault, my great fault” to “you who take away sins but not guilt”to say one thing precisely: formal absolution is not enough if there is no forgiveness towards oneself first.
We were born free it's a pop-soul piece with an emotional crescendo that asks the heart to lighten up. The artistic direction is by Enrico Palmosiwith the guitars of Poncio Belleri and a full-bodied choir that gives the song the color of liberation.
The lyrics of “We were born free” by Matteo Faustini
We are publishing the full text of We were born free with the authorization of the author and publisher, one day after the official release of the song on the radio and on all digital platforms.
Every time I say I'm fine
Every time I tell a lie
Then I wonder why I'm alone
If every time I accuse others
But it's my fault
It's not enough for me to breathe
It's not enough for me to live
Today I want to feel good
I want to feel good
Who I will be tomorrow I don't know
I can choose it tomorrow
We were born free
We were born free
Who I will be tomorrow I don't know
I can choose it tomorrow
We were born free
We were born free
(Today I want) I want to feel good
(Today I want) I want to feel good
(Today I want) I want to feel good
I want to feel good
And if I'm wrong and if I'm wrong
And if I'm wrong
It's my fault, my fault
My great fault
And if I'm wrong and if I'm wrong
And if I'm wrong
You who take away sins
But not the feelings of guilt
We are in this race for balance
Higher bigger further ahead of all obstacles
That we meet holding hands
That impossible dream is not
So far away
Who I will be tomorrow I don't know
I can choose it tomorrow
We were born free
We were born free
Who I will be tomorrow I don't know
I can choose it tomorrow
We were born free
We were born free
Today I want
I want to feel good
(Today I want) I want to feel good
(Today I want) I want to feel good
I want to feel good
In the text Matteo Faustini builds a double-track dialogue: on the one hand the recognition of daily lies (“Every time I say I feel good / Every time I tell a lie”), on the other the clear affirmation of freedom as a choice (“I don't know who I will be tomorrow / I can choose tomorrow”). The refrain “We were born free” becomes the fulcrum of a song that aims to lighten rather than explain, and which ends with the simplest possible declaration of intent: “I want to feel good”.
