Madonna has responded to her latest album ‘Confessions II’ hitting the top spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart, saying that she “cannot express how grateful and surprised” she is.
The new record is a sequel to 2005’s ‘Confessions On A Dance Floor’ and sees Madonna reunite with producer Stuart Price, who co-wrote and produced the original album. It is her first studio album since 2019’s ‘Madame X’, and arrived earlier this month.
Since it dropped, the album debuted at Number One on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and has already been getting rave reviews from fans and critics alike.
Now, Madonna has responded to the praise for the record and admitted that it caught her off-guard.
“Words cannot express how grateful and surprised I am by the incredible reception ‘Confessions on a Dance Floor’ has received,” she shared on Instagram. “Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this and who has helped make this dream come true. Especially my fans. The goodwill and positivity has been incredible.”
The singer also said that she was “still pinching myself” that the album has topped the charts, adding that she released the record as it was her “dream was to make people dance this summer” and “bring people joy”.
“Dreams do come true,” she concluded.
With ‘Confessions II’ hitting the top of the charts, Madonna is now the only artist with at least one Number One album in the 1980s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020s.
Billboard also highlights that it is her 10th album at the top of the charts – with the first being 1984’s ‘Like a Virgin’ – and makes her the fourth artist to have 10 Number Ones on both the Billboard 200 and Hot 100 charts, joining Taylor Swift, Drake and The Beatles.
‘Confessions II’ includes the Sabrina Carpenter collaboration ‘Bring Your Love’, which was released as the album’s lead single earlier this year, as well as ‘I Feel So Free’, which NME described as a “hedonistic deep house-flavoured floor-filler”, and the “pounding” club-ready single ‘Love Sensation’.
In a four-star review of ‘Confessions II’, NME wrote: “By drawing from her past, both personally and musically, Madonna has made her most vital album in over two decades. This grande dame still knows how to make us move.”
Last month, Madonna released Confessions II – The Film, a star-studded short film accompaniment to the album. The project features appearances from Carpenter, Kate Moss, Julia Garner, Benedict Cumberbatch, Shygirl, Richard E. Grant, Debi Mazar and Arca, among others.
Since then, the singer has teased that “something bigger is coming” after the promotional run for the album – hinting at a possible Glastonbury 2027 slot – as well as played release shows in Paris, Los Angeles and London, and been forced to withdraw from a surprise appearance at London Pride over apparent safety concerns.
Later this week, she will join Justin Bieber, Shakira and BTS during the first-ever World Cup final Halftime show – a Super Bowl-style event at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Sunday (July 19), organised by Coldplay’s Chris Martin.
