Jean-Michel Jarre has chosen Jazz Open Modena for the only Italian date of his tour: on July 18th the French artist will bring a special immersive show of electronic music, technology and audiovisual experimentation live, including monumental lasers, architectural mapping, giant screens, virtual reality, three-dimensional audio and generative visuals. Designed to dialogue every time with the place that hosts them, his concerts transform the entire environment into a spectacular synchronized machine capable of simultaneously integrating synths, sequences, electronic percussion and audiovisual effects. From large outdoor events to international clubs and arenas, Over the years, the French artist has redefined the very concept of live entertainment while maintaining intact his drive towards innovation and the search for instruments capable of making electronic music “visible”.
The Jazz Open Modena concert arrives at the height of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of “Oxygène”, the 1976 album that revolutionized instrumental electronics with its atmospheric and pioneering sound, selling over 18 million copies worldwide. A seminal work that continues to influence creatives, producers and performers of different generations even today. Half a century after its release, “Oxygène“ represents the symbol of artistic research projected towards the future: from analogue modular synthesizers to 360 degree immersive audio, from the most recent experiments with artificial intelligence, to VR concerts with digital avatars, up to simultaneous physical and digital performances. The “Welcome to the Other Side” concert, held in the virtual Notre-Dame during the pandemic, is one of the most extreme examples: Jarre actually played in the studio, while his avatar performed in a digital cathedral in front of avatar-spectators connected from all over the world.
His new book will also be published on October 8, 2026 “Machines by Jean-Michel Jarre: A History of Electronic Music”, published by Thames & Hudson, which traces the evolution of electronic sound through the instruments that have marked its history. Built around his personal collection of over 80 musical instruments and enriched by contributions from illustrious figures on the international electronic scene, the volume spans more than a century of innovation between legendary synths, rare instruments and technologies that have helped shape new sonic imagery and entire musical movements. Machines: A History of Electronics Music It promises to be the manual of electronic music, destined to become an indispensable reference text for every recording studio or artist in the sector.
The Grand Finale on 18 July with Jarre will be preceded by many other extraordinary events of Jazz Open Modena which from 13 to 18 July will transform the Emilian city into an open-air stage with performances by Diana Krall and Gregory Porter (13 July), Moby (14 July), Parov Stelar and Meute (15 July), Jamie Cullum and Joss Stone (16 July), Luca Carboni (17 July).
