People get to know Chuck Ragan in different ways: through Hot Water Musichis solo career, the Revival Tour together with artists like Frank Turner And Brian Fallonor even thanks to his fly fishing business in California. In any case, what is striking is its authenticity, a quality that runs through Love And Lorehis first solo album in ten years, released while he Hot Water Music celebrate the success of Vows.
Conceived in 2016 and initially planned for 2019, Love And Lore it was postponed due to the pandemic and completed in 2023. The record shows Ragan push beyond traditional folk, exploring new sonic territories. “I always try to do something different, because if you don't experiment, you don't learn,” he explains. Songs like Echo The Halls highlight the more melodic side of his voice, while even older songs find new life thanks to their still strong emotional charge. The musical approach has also changed: Todd Beene he says that the group chose to “start from scratch”, freely following what seemed most natural. Next to Ragan experienced musicians appear as George Rebelo And Spencer Duncanwhich help create a wider, more dynamic sound.
The album explores with great sincerity themes such as relationships, family, distance and the emotional weight of everyday life. Through songs like Reel My Heart it tells of the pain of living away from loved ones and the need to find balance in nature and in the most authentic affections. For Raganfinishing a record means reaching a form of liberation: listening to it one last time, putting it back on the shelf and letting go of everything that had poured into it.
