In a story published in his Red Hand Files, Nick Cave tells what is the worst thing about being an old rock star. More than twenty years after his passing, Elliott Smith's legacy remains as alive as ever. The American singer-songwriter, who died on October 21, 2003 at just 34 years old, was honored with the official naming of an asteroid which now bears his name. The initiative was born from Orlando Campopiano, an independent director from Edinburgh, who had the idea while listening to “Shooting Star”, a song included in the posthumous album “From A Basement On The Hill”. After obtaining the support of the musician's heirs and the collaboration of the PAN-STARRS team, responsible for the discovery of the asteroid, Campopiano…

Time comes for us all in ways both banal (your Warped Tour tee is worth $300 on Grailed) and cataclysmic (someone you love dies). On Distant Lands, their fourth solo record, zzzahara, aka Los Angeles’ Zahara Jaime, stares backwards at the past’s foggy contours, whether it was last night’s nightmare or the vicissitudes of childhood. Through a slurry of distorted guitars and deadpan singing, the album brushes against grief, addiction, and abandonment through a layer of gauzy nonchalance.Sunny like an overexposed photograph, dysthymic like the “before” half of a Zoloft commercial, the record’s gentle shoegaze would sound just as at…
An important year for indie rock, full of fundamental albums that laid the foundations for the music of the entire decade of the Nineties. There are many records released in 1990 that left their mark, as the golden decade of Britpop, but also of alternative rock and grunge, dawned. The Radio X webzine has decided to collect 25 of them in this list. Many of these records are absolute classics, several of them are also our milestones. Although obviously this is a very subjective and inevitably questionable selection, to be taken – as usual – only as a starting point…
In 2000, Jake Kaufman scored his first game as a professional chiptune composer: a mobile version of a silly little arcade game called Q*bert for the Game Boy Color (GBC). Q*bert is an archetypal 8-bit game: On essentially one single screen, with no substantial narrative, the objective is to step on squares to change their colors. It was a basic, consequence-free game, but the composing process was the opposite. With the GBC’s sound chip limiting him to just four individual instruments (bleeps and bloops), Kaufman could have taken the easy route and phoned in a simple score for a simple…
French electro-pop artist Cannelle Ferragu is from a tiny village in the south of France that you’ve probably never heard of. Where she lived, she’s said, there were no other Black girls and no one who shared her interests, “no alternative people whatsoever.” Only as a teenager did Cannelle discover an escape through Instagram and Tumblr: She’d go out into the meadows and stage self-photoshoots, pretending to be a “fairy in the forest” with her icy-blue hair.Since then, Cannelle’s world has opened up: On a whim, she began making music, and she’s played shows alongside Live From Earth in Paris…
