Adam Sandler officiated Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding at Madison Square Garden on last night, helping the happy couple to tie the knot. Many fans expressed surprise that the Happy Gilmore actor was selected to lead the festivities, but the couple actually does have a history with Sandler.
Kelce notably appeared in Happy Gilmore 2 last year as a waiter. Later in the film, he made a shirtless cameo alongside Bad Bunny and a bear. “Travis is such a gentle, nice guy, and funny as hell,” Sandler told Entertainment Tonight. “He's like the guys I grew up with. When I was with Travis, it reminded me of my buddies in high school and just being able to laugh and say the things you want to say.”
Sandler added of Swift, “Taylor is incredible. Taylor is so damn nice to my family and has always been. My kids have met Taylor a bunch of times over the years, and she's ridiculously nice to them and warm.”
Kelce shared on podcast Bussin' With the Boys that working with Sandler was “the fucking best.” He explained, “He was even further than what you could have ever expected. And he was so helpful in terms of making me feel comfortable in scene.”
On the same podcast, Kelce said he ended up in the film after suggesting he wanted to be part of the sequel. “I threw it out there that I would kill to be in a Sandler movie or anything like that, and I had a Happy Gilmore hat on on [my podcast] New Heights one time,” he said. “And they were like, 'Oh, man, there's rumors that Happy Gilmore 2 might be coming out, are you gonna be in it?' I'm just like, 'I'd quit everything right now to be in a fucking Adam Sandler movie, or be in Happy Gilmore 2.'”
Although there was chat that Swift herself could have made a cameo, Sandler confirmed that it was never in the works. “We didn't want to bother Taylor,” Sandler told Extra. “We just let Taylor entertain the world as she does. I listened to 'All Too Well' three times in a row today with my kid. She's done a lot for our planet, so we love her.”
Swift did praise the film on social media, writing, “Happy Gilmore 2 had me cackling and cheering the whole movie. An absolute must watch.”
Sandler's daughters Sadie and Sunny attended the Los Angeles premiere of Swift's Eras Tour concert film in 2023 alongside the comedian. The following year, Sandler admitted on Conan O'Brien's podcast that he “can get a little jumpy” around the singer. “Just cause I don't wanna blow it for my kids,” he said. “So I'm a little like, 'Taylor, Taylor,' like I talk a little too loud or something. I don't stay as cool as I can.”
He continued, “People talk about The Beatles of it all and her. I mean, so many smash hits. There's not a word my kids don't know. … I know them too, by the way. But they know them inside and out. Remember the Beatles [where] every song on the record did you know? That's Taylor Swift, too. There's not a song you skip. You go, 'That one's pretty damn cool.'”
Sandler appeared on Kelce's New Heights podcast last year and admitted that his entire family had been cheering the couple on. “When you guys first started dating, my family was like, 'Yes. Look how good they are together. He's a gentleman and she's having so much fun,'” Sandler acknowledged.
