In August 2024, the band Deer Tick were out for an old-fashioned Italian dinner when the band's founder, John McCauley, began pitching his bandmates on his grand idea for their next album. He envisioned a record based on the group's shared hometown of Providence, Rhode Island, with every song set around the city, including, perhaps, the very restaurant at which they were dining, the Old Canteen, a mid-century red sauce spot that hosted everyone from Frank Sinatra to Providence's infamously mob-affiliated mayor Buddy Cianci. “I remember John specifically saying, 'This is the assignment,” recalls drummer Dennis Ryan, who was so…
One of the great mysteries of today's post-punk scene is the lack of recognition, at least by users of the genre, of Iceage as one of its key bands. Maybe it's because their first records weren't the most immediate or maybe, simply, because they don't come from the British Isles or the United States. Now on their sixth album, Elias Rønnenfelt and his band don't mind it and continue to incorporate new elements into their ever-changing and decadent post-punk recipe. If the new element of the previous “Seek Shelter” (from 5 years ago now) was represented by the baggy/madchester sounds,…

Last year, the Red Clay Strays found themselves fully embraced by the country-music establishment, winning the CMA Award for Vocal Group of the Year. Chalk up their Nashville acceptance to the band's Mobile, Alabama, roots, maybe, or the Southern drawl of chiseled lead singer Brandon Coleman. But on Grateful, the Strays' third album, they reveal themselves to be not country's next great group, but a bona fide rock & roll band. And a God-fearing one at that. Reuniting with Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb, who oversaw the six-piece's 2024 effort, Made by These Moments, the Strays deliver an urgent, timely record…

The Black Crowes’ Chris Robinson has hit out at a crowd at their live show in Florida for doing a patriotic chant, describing them as “fucking ignorant”.
