There's a telling scene in Regime Changethe devastating new chronicle from New York Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan about the first year of the second Trump administration. Elon Musk, former DOGE leader, had just split with the president over the Big Beautiful Bill, ranting on social media that the signature piece of legislation was an “abomination.” Swan and Haberman describe President Trump's reaction when he sees the post: He looked at it for several beats, an expression close to pensive crossing his face. “They always leave me,” he finally said. “They always do this. This is why I…

Assigned to review Pet Shop Boys’ debut album Please in the summer of 1986 for the Village Voice, journalist Barry Walters heard resonances unusual for the times. “The choice of font, the song subjects, everything about them spoke of queerness,” Walters said in an interview. “I thought, well, it would be unfair to talk about them as possibly being queer without being honest myself. So I came out. Maybe that’s tactical. I think that’s just, again, my heart leading my head.”Mighty Real: A History of LGBTQ, 1969-2000 is the culmination of Walters’ decades-long reporting on queer music culture for SPIN,…

PJ Harvey's last album found her singing about a fictionalized version of her home country. For her next project, she's headed as far as humanly (or inhumanly) possible. On her somber new single, “Voyager,” she imagines what the voice of the Voyager 2a space probe NASA launched in 1977, would say. “Force fields, high winds, cold moons, bright rings, hear my signal, will you follow?” she sings, her voice sounding spectral with glitches. “Look back at us like a speck of dirt.” Keyboards undulate between two notes, quivering like a fading signal, as she sings, “Choose light, choose love.” Strings…
