After a journey that in recent years has led him to talk about himself with greater maturity, and a social presence with millions of views, Shades returns with a song that is openly a candidate for the role of summer hit. 5K mixes hip hop, funk and pop, with a groove that nods to nineties productions and a chorus designed to stay in your head.
Behind the lightness and ironic tone, however, the piece addresses a very concrete theme. In an urban scene often dominated by the display of wealth, luxury cars and exclusive holidays, 5K he chooses the opposite path: he sarcastically talks about how difficult it is to make ends meet, even for those who work and pursue their goals.
Shades – 5K: the meaning of the song
The song highlights a generation that continues to dream, travel and fall in love, but that every day deals with out-of-control prices, salaries that are never enough and a constant feeling of economic precariousness. All this without giving up a smile, in line with the figure that Shades he has always used to talk about everyday topics.
The title, however, comes from a personal and very concrete story, which the artist himself told in a video published on social media. In 2025 Shades he left Sony to found his own independent label, the Ventura'snamed after his mother.
“But how much money did my record label invoice as an independent. Last year I went from Sony to nothing, giving up the figure of 320k. A big leap into the void. So I created Ventura's which takes its name from my mother and takes care of my music, concerts and editions. Oh yes, even the brands. And we have invoiced more than half a million euros. All very cool but, if from this money you remove the 60% taxes, the production costs of the tour, the expenses of video production, productions, mixes, masters, travel, press office, radio promoter, advertisement, accountant, management expenses, I have more or less left… the title of my new summer hit, 5K.”
Hence the meaning of the song, which transforms the real budget of an independent artist into the ironic portrait of someone who works, invoices and then finds himself with much less than it seems. What also makes the project special is the choice of production: at a time when much of the music comes from increasingly automated processes, 5K it is built on a base entirely played by musicians, a choice that brings the performance back to the center and gives the piece a warm and direct sound.
The meaning is summed up in a simple question, which Shades leaves it suspended until the refrain: “After all, what are we missing?”. The answer, dry and ironic, comes immediately afterwards: “The money”.
