I was just really into the movement. I ended up signing the Pack. I remember one day I was getting driven to a show and the driver was playing one of the Pack’s mixtapes. He played the whole shit. I was like, “Who is that?” He said, “They the Pack, they from Berkeley.” I told him, “I wanna meet them little dudes.” He set up a meeting for me to meet them; only thing, the Pack didn’t show up, it was some other dudes.
We sitting in front of a hamburger stand and they like, “We ain’t the Pack, but the Pack is our homies, but you can’t get to the Pack unless you go through us.” I was just like, “Nigga, I was just tryna tell them I like their music,” but they was just talking about how much money they gonna be getting from me. That was so unprofessional. I did my due diligence and called around and found out one of the dudes in the Pack was my homeboy’s son. He got to the bottom of it. That was their homies, they intercepted the call to try to get something out of it. The Pack didn’t even know.
I ended up signing them and they were doing shows with me and we’d be hours from the Bay and motherfuckers would know all the words. They started telling me about Myspace. I was like, “What the fuck is Myspace?” Shit was crazy. It went over my head completely. But they had such a dope following. To this day I’ll bring them out on stage to do “Vans.”
Drake: “Marvins Room”
I was with this chick and she told me to play some Drake. I was like, “Who?” Then she proceeded to play me “Marvins Room” and all those Take Care songs. That shit was just doing something to her. I was like, “Let me get up on some goddamn Drake.” Then when I got these chicks around I was playing them some Drake and that shit worked. They was loving it. All the females was loving it. I like hardcore, talking shit Drake, but R&B Drake was just doing something for the females that I love.
