In a new trailer for Pop Culture Jeopardy!, Saturday Night Live‘s Colin Jost tests contestants’ knowledge on topics ranging from “sad girl summer” to “TV episode titles.” Pop Culture Jeopardy! adds a twist to the popular game show that started in 1964, where 81 teams will answer clues on topics such as alternative rock, The Avengers, Broadway, MMA, Gen Z, and Zendaya. The SNL star will host 40 episodes of the Jeopardy! spinoff series.
“The show that reminds us that without pop culture, there’s just culture,” Jost says in the trailer, released Wednesday.
Jost has previously been featured in two clues on Jeopardy!, and didn’t know the answer either time.
“I found out about it because my mom sent me the clip and she said, ‘I would have gotten it.’” Jost told Deadline.“When you’re a clue on Jeopardy!, you feel like you’ve made it, but then in the same moment you realize, ‘Oh, I have not.’”
The Jeopardy! spinoff sticks to the question-and-answer format, but allows three players per team and offers a grand prize of $300,000. The first three episodes of the game show premieres Dec. 4 on Prime Video, and will release three new episodes weekly. Pop Culture Jeopardy! joins a crop of classic shows adapted for streaming, including Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity, hosted by Travis Kelce, and Fast Friends, a game show headed to Max based on the sitcom Friends.
Jost previously hosted the White House Correspondent’s Dinner in April; he’s the first SNL cast member to host it since Cecily Strong in 2015. Beyond the pop culture gig, Jost will continue to star in the “Weekend Update” segment for SNL. He started writing on SNL in 2005, and began co-hosting the parody news broadcast “Weekend Update” in 2014.
