Gaze out from the city quayside in Belém, Brazil, and there’s a lot to take in. To the north, the sprawling Baia de Marajo estuary stretches towards the mighty Atlantic Ocean. To the south, an epic blanket of green – the uppermost tip of the Brazilian Amazon, 60 per cent of all the world’s remaining tropical rainforest. To the east, in contrast, is the concrete skyline of the region’s urban capital. Home to 2.5million people, Belém’s waterside colonial old town is soon dwarfed by high-rise apartment blocks. Cutting through it all, and oozing Main Character Energy, the muddy Guamá River.…

Approfondimenti – La scienza dell’incipit – Francesco De Gregori, 20 canzoni dall’attacco folgorante
As the impact of Donald Trump's war with Iran continues to impact the American economy, administration officials continue to insist that things are not just fine, but excellent. People are buying American oil, the stock market is hitting record highs, and we are entering the long-promised golden age. But the numbers don't lie, and this week the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that inflation jumped almost 3.8 percent in April, reaching its highest levels since May 2023. According to the Tuesday report from the Department of Labor, the spikes in inflation since Trump initiated the war in February are primarily…

nayt I Individual album review by Anna Ida Cortese “I no longer recognize myself, yet I continue to look for myself.”Cesare Pavese Listening theor Individual I had the feeling of entering a flow of consciousness that never really stops, as if each song was connected to the next more by necessity than by structure, and the only possible way was to go through it all, from beginning to end, and then perhaps start again, but without the pretense of putting everything back in order. It's like reading someone's mind and staying there, with your thoughts still open, while things pop…
David Arnold is a James Bond expert. In 1997, shortly after scoring sci-fi blockbuster Independence Day, he recruited Pulp, Iggy Pop, Bjork, Chrissie Hynde and Leftfield for the ambitious ‘Shaken And Stirred’ Bond covers album. 007 boss Barbara Broccoli was so impressed, she hired him to work on the soundtrack for that year’s Tomorrow Never Dies. He returned for The World Is Not Enough, Die Another Day, Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace. Now Arnold’s back in the world of martinis and MI6 for ‘First Light’, his titular collaboration with fellow Bond superfan Lana Del Rey that serves as the…
