“THEt's been a big week!” declares James Smith, sat in a precious patch of Kings Cross shade in the middle of London's apocalyptic heatwave. “I've just been to the Royal Academy to see my paintings, now I'm doing an interview with NMEtomorrow I'm starting therapy – AND,” he suddenly remembers, waggling a finger gleefully towards bassist Ryan Needham, “we're going to Dishoom later! A lot's happening!” There's more than a whiff of playful humor to the way the Yard Act frontman delivers his to-do list. Half a decade in and approaching the release of career-best third album 'You're Gonna Need…

On the latest episode of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart addressed Donald Trump‘s mediocre reaction to the death of Senator Lindsey Graham, who died on July 11. “The big news from the weekend was the sudden passing of Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina,” Stewart said as he opened the show. “Now, obviously, I knew him a bit from lobbying down at Capitol Hill, but I didn’t know him particularly well. So I’ll let Lindsey Graham’s best friend memorialize the late senator.” Stewart then cut to a clip from Fox and Friends, where Trump called in and said, “He was…

It's called “If I were” the new song by Martha May which explores one of the most common and exhausting dynamics of the human condition: the risk of being trapped in a time that doesn't exist. Through a continuous game of hypotheses (“if I were”, “if I had”, “if only I had”…), the song photographs that psychological limbo tense between the ghosts of the past – the things not done or the missed presences – and the projections of an ideal future never experienced. It is not necessarily an autobiographical piece, but rather a universal story that anyone can relate…

Garrett Burke collects weird sounds. He has an aficionado’s ear for the wet slap, the digestive gurgle, the fleshy smack that might be pornographic, violent, or both. The Philadelphia-based experimental percussionist crafts all of these noises himself, and then stores them in Ableton, like jars in an apothecary. He hammers out a welter of cross-rhythms on a discontinued MIDI drum pad with all these sounds, piles on effects with a rat’s nest of modules, mulches that back into Ableton, and then spits it back out onto his drum pad, adding ever more layers.Somewhere in this regurgitative process, the music takes…
Sadie Dupuis is still a hot mess—“like, infinite degrees,” to be exact. On “Six Ways,” her humblebrags surf programmed drumrolls that tick like a faulty gas stove and riffs that punch like the ones on Sleigh Bells’ debut. It’s been over a decade since the Speedy Ortiz record where Dupuis dubbed herself “caller of the shots” and “the best at being second place”; now, the cool-loser laureate fancies herself an “armchair head cheerleader.” It’s a juxtaposition that sums up Dupuis’ niche as a hardworking oddball putting her slacker vocal fry and poetry MFA to use in tongue-twisting, slice-of-life pop rock…
