Recently, in casual conversations, I’ve been asked for my opinion about the October report that “No Rap Songs Are in the Billboard Hot 100’s Top 40 for the First Time Since 1990” more so than my thoughts on any particular rap album or song from this year. I never gave anyone the “Yeah, this rap shit is dead” answer they seemed to be looking for, but the question did make me have to think about what gets me excited about rap these days.Immediately, I thought about regional scenes, but I realized it wasn’t just that—it was the marginal and almost…
Beyoncé will return to the Met Gala for the first time in 10 years when she co-chairs the annual event next spring. The pop legend, who last attended the Met Gala in 2016, was one of three celebrity co-chairs announced today (Dec. 10), alongside Nicole Kidman and Venus Williams. Anna Wintour, who just stepped down as editor-in-chief of Vogue — the Met Gala's lead organizer — will also retain her regular role as one of the event's co-chairs. Neither a dress code nor a theme for the Met Gala has been announced, but the event will be tied to “Costume…
DJ Elmoe knocked our socks off with footwork that still sounds as fresh as the first day we heard the style. Lindstrøm returned with the umpteenth coming of space disco and got us starry-eyed for the umpteenth time. Purelink dusted off ambient dub, Anthony Naples dabbled in tech-house, OPN reacquainted himself with a beloved sample pack—there were plenty of reasons to feel just fine about feeling nostalgic this year. But there were just as many opportunities to scrape your jaw up off the floor: the mangled drum science of Blawan’s SickElixir, the polyrhythmic abandon of Djrum’s Under Tangled Science, the…
On Tuesday 9 December Manuel Mariano, aka Welo, will return to perform on the stage of Sanremo Giovani 2025 on the occasion of the semi-final of the competition which will bring two talents to the stage of the Ariston theater in February in the New Proposals section. On his part, the artist has a very interesting song, entitled Emigrated (Island Records/Universal), which tells with originality the difficulties of having to decide whether to remain tied to one's roots (as the singer did) or whether it is better to leave in search of better opportunities. The song, already available on all…

Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, whose prolific career included unforgettable roles in the Mortal Kombat films and The Man in the High Castle series, he died at the age of 75. Tagawa died in Santa Barbara on Thursday due to complications from a stroke, Rolling Stone has confirmed. “I had the privilege of representing Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa for many years as his long-time manager, but our relationship grew into something far deeper — he became like family,” said his longtime manager, Margie Weiner. “Cary was a rare soul: generous, thoughtful, and endlessly committed to his craft. His loss is immeasurable. My heart is with…
The BRIT Awards have confirmed the shortlist for the 2026 Critics’ Choice, with Jacob Alon, Rose Gray and SIENNA SPIRO all vying for the title. The three artists follow in the footsteps of previous winners including Adele, Florence and the Machine, Ellie Goulding and more, with The Last Dinner Party and Myles Smith taking home the title in more recent years. Since the award was introduced in 2008, it has been considered a reliable barometer in predicting who will become household names, recognising the festival headliners and prize winners of the future. Jack Saunders exclusively revealed the nominations this evening (December…

Much to the delight of dead-eyed, toothy-grinned CEOs, AI is steadily coiling around the music industry’s throat. It’s ubiquitous: Hip-hop producers are turning computer-concocted samples into viral sensations, record labels are licensing their catalogs to companies like Klay and Udio, and data-center slop is topping the country charts. It’s so woven into our reality, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a troupe of brewery chooglers cover a Velvet Sundown song sometime soon. But AI doesn’t actually generate anything worthwhile; it simply regurgitates whatever it’s been fed as palatable vibe signifiers—uncanny algorithmic gloop presented as human to a population that’s barely…
