Mykki Blanco’s a tough one to pin down. Over the past 14 years and change, the artist known in government records as Michael Quattlebaum Jr. has been performing under a genderbending persona both braggadocious and tender. Speedrunning through genres (and artistic mediums; he recently got his MFA in Switzerland), Blanco doesn’t lay claim to any one particular sound: His songs run the gamut from industrial rap to Nine Inch Nails-style rock to ballroom. One thing Blanco has never been, though, is coy: I mean, his debut album came out swinging with the image of “white powder in both holes.” His new…

Unlike many of Busta Rhymes’ most fruitful creative relationships—Hype Williams, the Neptunes, Q-Tip, Spliff Star, Rah Digga, Swizz Beatz, DJ Scratch—his long-term partnership with producer J Dilla was never flashy, almost understated. When teaming with Dilla, Busta never got any volatile, flamboyant, shout-rap singles with music videos made of Tex Avery-styled antics and critical levels of fish-eye lens; never any hip-hop radio chokeholds or sneaky pop radio Trojan horses. However, the juxtaposition of Busta’s fire-breathing flow and Dilla’s muted, ill-proportioned pockets always served as a perfect chaser to the rapper’s more ostentatious moments of woo-hah and rowr-rowr and cha-cha-cha-cha-cha.Between 1996…

How about the choice to title a Doja Cat-dupe flex track “Nicole Kidman”? Surely this namedrop represents something relevant to the ADÉLA persona. Surely that something can’t begin and end with the couplet, “Moulin Rouge/My corset is so tight.” The point, one senses, is to get us clapping just like we do when Kidman shows up on the big screen at our local AMC. You can practically see ADÉLA sweat as she vies to become the next pop stan pet cause, but hardly any of this music is interesting or idiosyncratic enough to befit cult-fave status. Rosalía’s “Hentai” and Camila…

Sports Team have shared lively new single ‘Billy’, which they describe as a “love letter to getting desperately, insanely drunk at a carpeted pub on a Tuesday night”. The single marks the first new music from the Mercury Prize-nominated indie stars since they dropped their third album ‘Boys These Days’ last May, and followed it up with the wistful single ‘Medium Machine’. In the track, frontman Alex Rice and co. lean into the similar infectious, soul-tinged melodies, but add new elements of grit and jagged guitars to make it one of their most lively and raucous songs since their 2020…

Radiohead‘s Philip Selway, Live Nation and more have backed a new mental health touring scheme. Entitled the Pay It Forward Fund set up by the Music Industry Therapy Collective (MITC), the scheme aims to make specialist mental health support accessible for artists and crew on small and mid-scale tours. With touring professionals at “an elevated risk of stress, anxiety and burnout, as well as clinical depression and suicidality”, a press release states “that a growing number of larger tours now provide welfare or pastoral support as part of the production”. It added: “On smaller tours, those pressures can be compounded…

Prosecutors told jurors Tuesday that Chicago rap star Lil Durk “had his shooters on speed dial” when he allegedly set a murder-for-hire plot in motion that left rival rapper Quando Rondo’s cousin dead in Los Angeles. But Durk’s defense lawyers, Brian Steel and Drew Findling, fired back, calling the government’s case “replete with reasonable doubt” and built on cooperators desperate to avoid life sentences. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ian Yanniello gave the first closing argument on the 13th day of the murder-for-hire trial in downtown Los Angeles, arguing Lil Durk “wanted revenge for a fallen gang member,” a reference to the…

Three jurors discussed what happened behind closed doors during Lindsay Clancy’s closely watched triple murder case, which ended in a mistrial last Friday, with one revealing that the lone holdout “admitted he had reasonable doubt.” When speaking to Sue O’Connell of NBC10 Boston, Kellie Farina, one of the jurors, discussed listening to the 911 call made by Clancy’s now-ex-husband, Patrick Clancy, on the night of the incident. “It’s something that I will never not hear if I think about it,” said Farina. “It was the most horrific thing, and when we we heard it again in the jury room, we…
