We have reached the halfway point of the first half of the year and for some it is already time to take stock. As in the case of the online magazine Stereogum, which has published its ranking of the 50 best albums released so far this year. “Fifty albums aren't even enough to encompass the breadth of sounds that have animated 2026, but they offer a cross-section of the melodies and rhythms that have thrilled us thus far – writes Chris DeVille in the introduction – The following list is limited to the albums released by the end of May.…
As Belle & Sebastian share their buoyant 2026 Scotland World Cup anthem ‘It Only Takes One Lion’, frontman Stuart Murdoch has spoken to NME about capturing the feeling back home and his hopes for the team since childhood. Released today (Tuesday June 2), the Scottish indie heroes’ bid for their nation’s tournament anthem was written after the team’s surprise 4-2 qualifying win against Denmark. “I felt like we were watching history in the moment, like the hand of God from the old National Lottery adverts was pointing at us,” Murdoch told NME about that game-changing victory. “It was meant to…
Ben Gibbard was overwhelmed by his memories. It started a few years ago on the joint anniversary tour that the Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie put on to celebrate 20 years of Give Up and Transatlanticism. Each night, the frontman would travel back in time, tap into his 26-year-old self and deliver convincing, vulnerable performances. But offstage, Gibbard, 49, was finding it difficult to switch back and forth between the past and present as his personal life took a rough turn. The frontman was going through a separation from photographer Rachel Demy, who he married in 2016. By…
NYC hardcore pioneers Cro-Mags are back with their first new song in six years, “Wired for Chaos,” which premieres today exclusively on Rolling Stone. The thundering track — which shares a name with a recent documentary about the wild life of frontman Harley Flanagan — contains everything Cro-Mags have always done best. As Flanagan himself put it in a statement, “It comes in with an aggressive metal intro befitting a UFC walk-in or a video game, then bursts into a more traditional HC thrash vibe before returning to a heavy beatdown at the end in an unmistakable Cro-Mags style.” As…

Jack Whitehall has said he is “honoured” that Becky Hill has written a diss song about him after his “Wetherspoons Whitney” comment. The comedian hosted the 2025 BRIT Awards and he took aim at Hill by referring to her as a “Wetherspoons Whitney”, insinuating that she was less well off because of her Midlands accent. Hill, who is from Bewdley, Worcestershire, fired back at the time, highlighting how many of the night’s winners, including Charli XCX, A.G. Cook and The Last Dinner Party, had come from highly privileged backgrounds with expensive educations. “Imagine being called a ‘Wetherspoons Whitney’ by some privately educated nepo baby who has a TV show with daddy the showbiz…
