Before he died, Ace Frehley was working on Origins, Volume 4as we read in a post published (and then deleted) on Instagram in which it was announced that due to a “small fall” he had been forced to cancel a concert, but he was fine and expected to resume work on the album soon.
The first volume of Origins was released in 2016 and contained covers of Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones, Thin Lizzy, Steppenwolf, Kiss and others who inspired and influenced him (but also the first recording with Paul Stanley in almost twenty years now, i.e. Fire and Water of Free, and Cold Gin by Kiss remade with Mike McCready). Just in 2016 Frehley told Rolling Stone US what were the five songs he would have liked to write and why.
The first Who song that knocked me out. I can't think of any other rock song where the bass player plays the solo.
stairway to Heaven
Led Zeppelin
Jimmy Page at the top. I don't even know what category to put this piece in. Well, we need a separate category just for stairway to Heaven.
The first song that Gene, Paul and Peter played when I arrived to audition with them. It grabs you right away.
Cream had a huge influence on the way I play and this is the classic wah-wah based track. I'll do it on my next tour, but I don't use pedals because I risk tripping over them.
A heavy piece that overwhelms you and has a fantastic breakdown with two lead guitars playing the harmonic part. And what a simply incredible atmosphere.
From Rolling Stone US.
