The streamer said Tuesday Untold: Wide Deceiver will “unpack the internet nickname and the far darker story it exposed”
People who can’t get enough about the Daejon Love story are in luck. Netflix announced Wednesday that the next installment of its Untold sports documentary series will tackle the story of Daejon Love, the viral scam artist who posed as an NFL star to scam dates out of millions of dollars.
The documentary will be called Untold: Wide Deceiver and “unpack the internet nickname and the far darker story it exposed,” according to a statement from Netflix. It joins a family of sports-related series from the streamer, including documentaries about the murder-suicide of retired NFL quarterback Steve McNair, Lamar Odom’s post-career scandals, and the controversial Australian Olympic breakdancer Raygun.
Love, 35, was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud after his August arrest. According to legal documents, Love and another man, 18-year-old Taylor Jamie Chan, worked to con millions of dollars from women on dating sites. Love posed online as a player for the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers, posting videos of himself running drills with a 49ers helmet, driving in expensive sports cars, and living a lavish lifestyle on social media. He used these accounts to join online dating sites and match with women, professing his love and devotion.
Once he convinced them they were in a committed relationship, he cajoled women to invest in a fake business. Chan posed as his investment adviser, and the two often shared falsified bank records, returns, and accounts. Many times the victims were pressured to send money and promised massive returns. If they were cash-poor, Love and Chan urged them to take out personal loans and promised they would make their money back. According to the Department of Justice, the duo made over $1.3 million from at least 26 victims, but the FBI believes there could be even more that have been defrauded. If convicted, Love faces a $250,000 fine and up to 20 years in prison.
Love’s case is ongoing. News of the documentary comes hours after he made his first appearance in federal court. Initial news of the project did not include a director, but a source close to the production told the Hollywood Reporter that the series will focus on the women Love targeted.
