As much as I fuck with all of the madcap sounds coming out of the West Indies at the moment, the laid-back shatta tunes Lov’nee has been pumping out lately are my sweet spot. She’s been popping in Martinique for a while now with melodic rap that she’s described as equally influenced by Lauryn Hill and Jocelyne Béroard, the heart of the legendary zouk band Kassav’, but with producer DJ Jyz, she’s locked into a midtempo groove that’s simultaneously traditional and of the times. On “Anonymat,” the familiar tinny bounce gives Lov’nee the space to skillfully cycle through flows, going from packing a ton of words into a single bar to chants of “Sa ki fèt” backed by high-pitched, echoing ad-libs. It’s super chill, until the out-of-nowhere kompa keyboard outro throws everything out of whack in the best way. There’s no escaping the urge to do the most in the Caribbean.
