The Editors are back with a new album. The band led by Tom Smith will release “Surface, Echo & Sound” on October 30th, the British band's eighth studio work and first recording chapter after “EBM” in 2022. Accompanying the announcement also comes the single “The Rush”, available together with a video clip shot in Tokyo and directed by Henry Ehara (see below).
After the electronic breakthrough of “EBM”, created with the contribution of Benjamin John Power, better known as Blanck Mass, the Editors have chosen to change perspective again. In the summer of 2025 the group met in Stafford to write and develop the new material in the rehearsal room, recovering a collective working method that recalls the beginnings of their career. A more direct and organic approach, far from the predominantly studio dimension that had characterized the latest albums.
Smith also contributed to directing the sound of the project towards greater essentiality. As already happened in his solo album “There Is Nothing In The Dark That Isn't There In The Light”, the singer built many of the new songs starting from the acoustic guitar. “It was a very productive summer,” said the frontman, recalling the sessions held in the Gloucestershire countryside: “Most of the time it was sunny, we were surrounded by greenery, in a small anonymous industrial area: practically the opposite of Berghain”.
“The Rush”, the first extract from the album, revolves around an imaginary conversation between two people sitting at the counter of a bar, busy reflecting on the best and worst moments of existence. Smith explained that the theme of mutual support and comfort found in closest loved ones runs through much of his compositions and represents one of the common threads of the entire album. In the song the singer also plays the mandolin, an instrument that plays an important role in the sound economy of the album. Guitarist Justin Lockey, who also took care of the recording and production, explained that the mandolin is used in an unconventional way, as a timbral element capable of emerging in the mix and contributing to the construction of the rhythms together with the acoustic guitar and drums.
