In a music market and a society that seem to constantly push towards distraction and standardization, ETTA chooses the most difficult and courageous path: that of absolute truth. Produced by V_Rus for B Music Records and distributed by ADA Music Italy / Warner Music Group, the new album “These things are me” it is a direct and unfiltered manifesto composed of twelve tracks.
We had a chat with ETTA to enter into the folds of this counter-current album, of the profitable partnership with V_Rus and of the collaboration with icons of Italian rock. Here's what he told us.
“These things are me” sounds like a manifesto rather than a simple album: how difficult was it to expose yourself so much without filters, especially at a time when everything seems to be pushing towards standardization?
The disc was created to not be part of this approval process. I believe that my music should serve to reward those who are different. The hardest part is finding a space where the truth can express itself.
The sound of the album ranges between rock, nu metal and more contemporary influences. How important was the work with V_Rus in defining this very recognizable identity?
The journey with V_Rus was a journey that lasted years. We met by starting to work on electro pop songs, we moved on to urban, and then finally met in rock.
Songs like Parapappa they attack the music market head-on. Do you feel conflicted with the industry?
I feel in conflict with a system that wants us as products — as disposable products, among other things, and not as products made to last.
In this album there are heavyweights like Pierpaolo Capovilla and Punkreas. What have you “stolen” in terms of attitude or artistic vision by working with icons who have made coherence their flag?
In this case the right term is appreciating and sharing. Working with them I discovered a truly important artistic weight.
In All Fake (False Flag) And Boom you address political and social issues without filters. What responsibility do you feel today as an artist in taking a stand?
I chose to make this type of music when I chose to take sides. I tried to touch on all the issues that are close to my heart, but above all to be consistent with myself and with the music I chose to make.
You talk about a “no filters” tour: what should we expect from the live shows? Will it be a more instinctive and physical show than in the past?
The live performance for me is the most important part, it's that moment in which what you've done becomes usable. While before there was the desire to make ETTA known as a musical project, now it is the desire to meet people, the desire to say: music can still change things.
Looking ahead: after this exposed and definitive album, do you feel the need to push yourself further or change direction?
The direction was clear to me from the moment I started rocking. I want to keep saying uncomfortable things, and there are many that I haven't talked about yet and that I need to say.
