“Venice is dead, there's no point insisting on the corpse.” This is what Pierpaolo Capovilla wrote a few hours ago on his official Facebook page, commenting on the results of the administrative elections held yesterday and Sunday, 24 and 25 May, for the Municipality of Venice. The centre-right candidate, Simone Venturini, triumphed (with a civic list at 30% of the preferences, and the coalition at 51%). And Capovilla attacks the comment like this: «Et voilà… Brugnaro's tourism councilor wins: the tumor, the metastasis of the city, wins».
He continues: «He wins because the so-called Metropolitan City voted for him, not Venice. Ordinary people, those who watch TV, voted for it. Mystification wins, that part of the country that does not care about the future of the Historic City wins. The enemies of the Historic City win.”
The conclusion, for Capovilla (who currently lives in Venice): «I will sell my apartment and go and live somewhere else. Venice is dead. There's no point insisting on the corpse.” Specifying and broadening the perspective: «Venice is murdered by the workers, who vote for their exploiters. Venice dies at the hands of a working class stripped of its values, of its conscience. An indoctrinated working class, unaware of its own destiny. Indifference wins, carelessness wins, hearsay wins, not public discourse, bar chatter wins, spritz, joints and cocaine win. Lies, social climbing and corruption win. The owner wins: tourism.”
And indeed, more specifically: «B&B won, no more, no less». The bitter conclusion: «Fuck you, Venice, you don't deserve anything anymore. Die, Venice, die overwhelmed by your enemies. You deserve it.”
