Why Last it is so successful, told by those who manage it Last Journal in view of the big concert, The fairy tale foreveron July 4, 2026 in front of 250,000 people.
A month after Tor Vergata, we asked a big fan who manages the Instagram community “Last Journal“, to tell us about the success of Last from the internal perspective of its fan base. The point of view is that of a fan and does not necessarily reflect the editorial line of All Music Italy. We publish it because we believe that on great phenomena the voice of those who experience that phenomenon from the other side of the stage is also needed.
Last, waiting for La Favola per semper 2026
The July 4, 2026 Last will perform in front of 250 thousand people to Tor Vergatain what will be remembered as the largest concert with paying spectators in the history of Italian music. Yet the Roman singer-songwriter is one of the most divisive figures on the Italian musical scene: either you love him madly or you can't digest him in the slightest. With no middle ground, take it or leave it, it's like this.
Faced with such a goal, achieved after just ten years of career, a question arises spontaneously: why is Ultimo so successful? What makes him different, in some way, from most of his colleagues in Italy?
To answer, from my perspective, we need to go back a few years. At Sanremo 2019, at that press conference.
Sanremo 2019, the turning point
There are moments that can change people's lives, positively or negatively. That episode was the turning point of 's career Last.
He arrives in the press room, he has just missed the Festival. He is visibly annoyed, nervous. The conference slips by, the tones heat up, and the phrase that remains engraved in the collective memory arrives: “You only have this week to feel important”. Silence falls. The curtain falls. It seemed like the end of everything.
Yet something unexpected happens: that night Last fills the first of the 42 stadiums he will fill in his career, his first Olympic Stadium, where he will then perform on July 4th of the same year in front of over 63 thousand people. From that moment on, his career has been a constant alternation of full stadiums and broken records. Always in the name of one word: truth.
The “truth” as a bond with fans
I follow Last from that distant 2019. His being true, without filters, both in music and in life, is something that made the bond between him and us, his fans, visceral, direct, almost unique.
We fans of Last we experience his music as a spiritual bond. Not in a fanatical sense, but in the sense that we recognize in the words of his songs the desire to tell himself in a simple and immediate way. Without filters. Without rhymes you try to please the radios. Without songs built to optimize listening. We recognize in him that truth I spoke about before, and that ability to speak to each of us directly.
As a music lover, I understand that his songs may seem a little “busy” or simple to an audience with a more attentive and cultured ear. I understand it. But often the effectiveness of a passage is not linked to the type of rhetorical figures used. It is linked to immediacy, to how that song manages to describe and photograph moments of people's lives. For me, this is where Ultimo found its ground: in its simplicity, it manages to describe human emotions and express them correctly, the positive ones but also the negative ones.
I like to say, to those who ask me, that every year his concert represents a sort of “personal session with the psychologist”. Not because I feel the need to tell someone about myself, but because those two hours of concert are for me – and for many of us – a moment of sharing. A personal collection in which the world outside goes on pause, and we can vent everything we have inside.
I would invite anyone who doesn't like his music to come to one of his concerts. Looking, like I do, at people's eyes while they sing. You can read the lives, the pain, the joys in those eyes. Just look at a pair of eyes while they sing in those concerts, and perhaps you would understand why Ultimo is so successful.
A suburban singer-songwriter, without press and without radio
Last he demonstrated to the world of music that a young boy from the suburbs of Rome with his piano and his voice, singing about emotions, lost loves, feelings, joy, pain, everything that seems banal but is part of the everyday life of every human being, can become almost universal. Even without the support of the press or radio.
And here, returning to that famous 2019, I believe that this has further strengthened the deep bond between him and us, between him and his people. A people who sees in Last the figure of the outsider. The slightly rebellious singer-songwriter who doesn't care about the press, the radio, who does exactly what he wants. And he claims to be remembered not for a telephone advertisement on television, but for his music. Only and exclusively for his music – a choice also confirmed by the recent renewal of the distribution agreement with Believe, which continues to keep him out of the classical major system.
Just browse through his social profiles to realize it: in addition to a few posts dedicated to his private life, there is nothing other than his music, the piano, “sweet friend”and even his music. Stop.
The absence of superstructures, of predefined schemes, of constructed things, in a musical world that spasmodically seeks number, in which attention is directed towards the glorification of the result rather than its stability over time, makes him in our eyes a figure to be protected. And he builds a solid thread, difficult to scratch, between his people and him.
Tor Vergata, an achievement that the fan base feels like its own
For us who follow his path every day, who feel told by his words, Tor Vergata does not simply represent the Italian record. It's something more. It is a shared point of arrival.
Each of us is proud of that goal as if we had achieved it ourselves. We feel an integral part of the journey that has brought and is taking us to Tor Vergata. We left, on that evening of July 4, 2019, from “Never stop believing in fairy tales” and we arrived at July 4, 2026 with “the fairy tale forever”. Why “Our story will never have an end”. And each of us is growing, day after day, with the awareness that a couple of hours a year are enough to forget about everything that happened around us.
I understand that Last may be an uncomfortable character, little appreciated by the general public. But his success is entirely and solely contained in his songs. It must be looked for there, in his songs. In their being a mirror of people's souls. In the ability of those words to be fully absorbed by those who listen to them. From those who, perhaps, do not stop at the appearance of fame, but voluntarily decide to take care of themselves for a few more minutes.
