Steven Wilson is ready to return with a new album, his eighth solo studio album. It will be called “The Overview” and will be released by Fiction Records on March 14, 2025. The album, lasting forty-two minutes, is composed of only two songs: “Objects Outlive Us” and “The Overview”, each inspired by the “panoramic effect ” experienced by astronauts looking at Earth from space.
The Porcupine Tree leader provided some details of the project in a note: “It is a 42-minute journey based on the so-called 'panoramic effect', according to which astronauts who see the Earth from space undergo a transformative cognitive change, experiencing often an overwhelming appreciation and perception of beauty and a greater sense of connection with other people and with the Earth as a whole However, not all experiences are positive; some see the Earth truly for what it is, insignificant and lost in the vastness of space, and the human race as a struggling species. As a reflection of this, the album presents images and stories of life on Earth, both good and bad.”
The final version of “The Overview” makes use of the studio help of historic collaborators Craig Blundell (drums), Adam Holzman (keyboards) and Randy McStine (guitars), as well as a series of lyrics by Andy Partridge of Xtc who contribute to form the story of “Objects Outlive Us”.
“The Overview” will be available on CD/LP/Blu-ray/D2C exclusive box set/D2C red vinyl LP + poster/mint LP. The vinyl versions were specifically mastered at half speed by Miles Showell at Abbey Road.
Accompanying the album is also a film directed by Miles Skarin. The film and album will premiere at the BFI IMAX cinema in London on Tuesday 25 February. The film will also be screened in Dolby Atmos in Italy, on March 5th from 7pm at the Barberini cinema in Rome, as a preview, in the presence of Steven Wilson with a live Q&A. From January 9th to January 31st, tickets will be reserved for those who purchase the bundles of the Lp Mint edition of the album with a specially priced cinema ticket, available only at Discoteca Laziale. From February 1st, tickets will be available for purchase directly at Cinema Barberini.
Having once again set aside the Porcupine Tree project – back in the limelight after 13 years with “Closure/Continuation” (2022) and the subsequent tour, which we reported on the Roman date – Steven Wilson is therefore ready to follow up his latest work released as a soloist, “The Harmony Codex”, released in 2023. Wilson's seventh solo album, was born during the pandemic period, even before the release of “The Future Bites” (2021). A title that refers to a story that Wilson inserted between the pages of his recent book “Limited Edition To One”, a text in which he had dissected many aspects that marked his impervious artistic parable, but which nevertheless allowed him (with his surprise sum) to achieve success, including commercial success, and obtain numerous recognition certificates. Once again, Wilson chooses to embrace different styles: progressive-rock, pop, psychedelia, hints of jazz and lots of electronics are the tasty ingredients of this complex prospectus.
After the release of “The Overview”, Steven Wilson will leave for a long European tour in the months of May and June, which also includes two events in Italy: June 7th at the Teatro Degli Arcimboldi in Milan and June 8th at the Parco della Music of Rome.
