The actor revived his classic character at the tennis tournament following reports that he'd secretly wrapped filming a new Ali G movie
Ali G “iz” back. Over the weekend, Sacha Baron Cohen popped up at the Wimbledon finals dressed as his iconic doofus, poser character, following reports that he'd just wrapped filming a new Ali G movie.
Cohen confirmed his return on a new official Ali G Instagram account, sharing a video of himself in the grandstands during the men's singles final at Wimbledon. In the clip, Ali describes tennis — which he's apparently just learned about — as “the crap version of ping pong” and states his intention to sell as much weed as possible during the match.
“And if u iz at dis borin wimbledore final lookin 2 get grand slammed, I iz here wif de hookup,” the post's caption added.
Just days before Ali G appeared at Wimbledon with some dime bags and pre-rolls, reports emerged that Baron Cohen had finished filming a new movie as the character. The film's existence was confirmed by the Hollywood trades, but details were of course scarce as Baron Cohen made the project in characteristic secrecy. No release date has been announced.
It's been several years since Baron Cohen last appeared in public as Ali G, one of his most famous characters (alongside Borat). He did a short bit as Ali G on The Tonight Show in 2024, when he pretended to moderate a debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump; and in 2016, he surprised producers of the Academy Awards when he made an unplanned appearance in character.
Baron Cohen debuted Ali G in the late Nineties, then broke through a few years later with his hit series, From Ali G Showin which he conducted deranged interviews with unsuspecting subjects. One movie, Ali G Indahousewas released in 2002, and it's notably the only Baron Cohen character film not done in mockumentary style.
