During her surprise set at Primavera Sound in Barcelona, Olivia Rodrigo called Robert Smith on stage to present live What's Wrong With Mea song that will be part of the new album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Lovand, out next Friday. The curiosity was not only the presence of the leader of the Cure, but the fact that Smith is the protagonist of a real duet: «This song is very special for me, especially because it is the first time that I have a featuring on one of my albums», explained Rodrigo before the performance.
However, it wasn't a real surprise. Last March, Smith said he had spent “a couple of memorable evenings in the studio” with the pop star, adding that it was “hard not to fall in love with his songs” (we wrote it here) and that he couldn't wait to hear what he would do in the future. At the time it seemed just a declaration of esteem, today we know that much more was hidden behind those words.
Rodrigo's love for the Cure, moreover, has never been a mystery. After mentioning the band in Drop Dead and released a single titled The Curehad continued to date Smith even away from the spotlight. The two had previously shared the stage at the Glastonbury Festival performing Just Like Heaven And Friday I'm in Lovebut no one imagined that the collaboration would end up in an album. So the Gen Z pop star and one of rock's last heroes meet halfway and, judging by the reception of Primavera Sound, the bridge between the generations seems to be working.
