Kristin Hersh has shared “Moths”, a new single that anticipates “Sugar On Blackstone”, her next solo album, out September 18th via Fire Records. The song moves around the theme of inspiration and the difficulty of recognizing it in a world dominated by distractions. Hersh describes its meaning this way: “We are dazed by distractions and don't always value concentration when inspiration crosses our path and we keep driving. We were never Icarus, no illusion of grandeur, just innocent to what comes next. Yet we are enchanted by that glow, the flame that burns the wings. So what? We ask the heavens and keep driving, calling it love, like moths to the light.”
The new album will also include the previously released singles “Dark Eyed Junco” and “Sundial”.
“Sugar On Blackstone” announces itself as a work that is both dark and luminous, intimate and essential, in which the historic voice of Throwing Muses, protagonist of the American independent scene since the 80s, returns to confront some of the central themes of his writing. Life and death, wealth and poverty, memory and loss are intertwined with small episodes of childhood that continue to reverberate into adulthood. At the center of the album are above all the bonds that resist time: those with musicians, family and friends, but also the evocative power of sounds and places, capable of suddenly bringing distant people and moments back to memory.
Recorded at Stable Sound Studios, “Sugar On Blackstone” features Hersh joined by two longtime collaborators: 50FOOTWAVE's Rob Ahlers on drums and Throwing Muses' Pete Harvey on cello. The dry instrumentation helps to create a warm and collected sound, in balance between fragility and strength, delicacy and tension. Providence, Rhode Island, the setting of Hersh's childhood and starting point for a reflection on home, memory and uprooting, also plays an important role. Streets and parks of the past become symbolic places crossed by mourning, survival and resilience. Overlaid on these images are those of continuous journeys, fires and movements across America, fueling a sense of restlessness that coexists with unexpected moments of tenderness.
With “Sugar On Blackstone”, Kristin Hersh thus adds a new chapter to her long solo production, continuing to transform memory and personal experience into intense, spare and deeply emotional writing.
