Kingcrown's music smells of denim vests and leather jackets with patches: this French group is in fact inspired by Judas Priest and Gamma Ray and with “Nova Atlantis” they release their third work after their 2019 debut entitled “A Perfect World” and its successor “Wake Up Call”, which left good sensations.
The guideline of this transalpine group are the raw and rough riffs and the writing full of quotes and certificates of affection towards the pillars of the power metal genre, such as Helloween of the first period and, for example, Symphony Tragedy” and “V: The New Mythology Suite”.
Starting from the cover and the title of the album, however, we can already grasp what the themes will be developed: mythology and mysticism, past and legendary worlds just like that of Atlantis, brought back to universal themes such as brotherhood and union (we still have to recover from tongue-twister-like, simple but decidedly impactful, by “All together we will win”catchy chorus in “Souls Of Travelers”).
Pieces like the first single “Real Or Fantasy”, both for the intrinsic message and for the musical lines, and “Letter To Myself” are manifestos of what Kingcrown play, then assisted by the production at the Domination Studio of Simone Mularoni of DGM (his touch can be felt, especially in the rhythmic parts). The voice of Joe Amore (heard for a long time in the transalpine Nightmare), with its scratched high notes, is a trademark and whether he finds himself interpreting more melodic ballads such as “A Long Way To Valhalla” or whether they are real anthems , like “Guardian Angels” and in the successful and pompous “Judgment Day”, deals with the notes in the same way, with few variations.
The rhythmic and granitic block is given by David Amore's drums and Sebastien Chabot's bass, while the virtuosity, solos and riffs are the work of Bob Saliba and Ced Legger.
This latest “Nova Atlantis” is a good mix between inventiveness and quotes, leaning more towards the latter, in truth; ranging between melodies and rougher passages, Kingcrown remain afloat in power metal and offer good, pandering and well-played tracks.
