Who are we when we stop identifying with what we do? It's the question that runs through All Waythe song by Jungle Julia the official video clip of which has just been released. A question born during a move, among the boxes of a new house in Rome, and became the heart of one of the most particular entries among this year's debuts.
Jungle Juliastage name of Giulia Covitto, is a Tuscan singer-songwriter with a rough and physical writing, raised between the Maremma countryside and the community of the Neocatechumenal Way. It is from there that her visceral relationship with the word and with spirituality comes, and a musical attitude that she herself describes as rock and out of tune, a way to spit out energy and tell who she is. His influences speak of PJ Harvey, Idles, Radiohead, Alabama Shakes: a sound world that is both intimate and edgy.
The meaning of Todo Modo
All Waywritten in October 2023, tells the theme of leaving as a search for oneself. During a move to his new home in Rome, Jungle Julia questions itself about belonging and identities built over time. The house becomes the metaphor of a cage whose walls can expand until they coincide with the entire world, but the underlying question remains: who we really are, once we remove what we do.
“I have a vague feeling, I'm alive only on a journey, on the journey between a new world and another way of seeing”he sings in the song. And he explains: “Todo Modo talks about the desire to leave and to understand what my roots are. What is family: the roots of blood, the history of each one, but also the roots of the heart, the ones you choose and dig every day with others”.
The video clip: the Virgin of Guadalupe asking for help to start again
The video clip expands the meaning of the song through a small symbolic story. In the center there is a statuette of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the main religious symbol of Mexico, found stuck between the rocks of a river and unable to continue. Jungle Julia helps her by busking: with a sign that reads «Ayúdanos a viajar»a hat and a water bottle, collects the money to buy a small plastic spaceship, the means that allows the statuette to continue its journey.
At the end, the Virgin is brought back and left in the same place in the river where she was found. The gesture transforms the path into a metaphor of care, solidarity and rebirth, where the musical performance becomes an act with symbolic value rather than a simple performance.
Todo Modo inside the Ora Nona project
All Way is contained, together with The Antsin Ninth hourthe third combo of unreleased songs published by Jungle Julia. If All Way look at the individual, The Ants it broadens its gaze to the community, with a radical question: what continues to unite us as human beings while eras, technologies and customs change relentlessly. Between references ranging from Rousseau to Fabrizio De André, the song reaches the image of humanity folded in on itself and on mobile phones.
Ninth hour is added to the first two combos, Vespers (focused on abandonment) e Praise (the awakening), completing the cycle of anticipations. The six tracks of the three combos will converge in the debut EP, expected within the year Island Records / Universal Music Italia.
The project also has a visual part built over time. The covers of the three episodes were created on film by Pippo Moscati and taken in front of three different Milanese churches, chosen for their architecture and the relationship with light rather than for their religious value: the spherical shape of the Church of San Massimiliano Kolbe for Vespersthe triangular geometry of the Parish of San Giovanni Bono for Praisethe Church of Santa Maria Annunciata al Niguarda for Ninth hour.
Before his recording debut, Jungle Julia he built his path step by step: the Officina Pasolini tender won in Rome, training with artists such as Tosca and Giovanni Truppi, a song written with Cristina Donà, the award for Best Performance at the Bianca d'Aponte Prize and, in 2024, the X Factor selections with Marlene Kuntz and PJ Harvey. Precisely on that occasion she was noticed by who would become her manager.
Jungle Julia she was also a guest of SPOT, the podcast of which All Music Italy is a media partner: its episode will be released soon and will be available on the YouTube channel together with the other episodes.
