Naska spoke to us about his new album, out on October 11th, The Freak Show without sparing yourself and with the happiness of someone who knows they have brought home a good job. A job that wouldn't have been the same without the presence of his dog, Dobby.
«It changed me a lot. I spent five years at home with Simone Panetti but he is a bit antisocial. I suffer from being alone and Dobby keeps me too much company, I feel less alone and I suffer much less from being alone. I talk about this topic in Smallone of the hardest songs I've written. I deal with the theme of loneliness, panic and mental health and it is also the last one I wrote on the album.”
An album that contains no ballads, it is entirely punk rock.
«They are there but they are disguised, they seem more like rock songs. I didn't think about how to do one song or another, when I'm in the studio I free myself from every obstacle and pattern. Even the concept arrived at the end, after writing Clown. With the album ready I decided that it had to take the form of this song.”
«On the album there is both Diego, sensitive and thoughtful, while Naska you find more in songs where I seem more like a runaway from home. But Diego is there, he is very present especially when I talk about having to put on my mask on the saddest days and go on stage. As I tell in Clownwhen I go on stage I forget my problems and it becomes the medicine.”
You mention Nirvana. Are you more grunge or more punk rock?
«Now that I think about it, Diego is more grunge and Naska is punk rock, American Pie, gin and tonic».
You speak to millennials but also to new generations.
«Yes, at the shows I see the younger ones but I also see my peers and I like to be the link between these two worlds. I also like to be defined as the prince of punk rock, it's a genre that was no longer popular but I wanted to bring everything back into fashion with tooth and nail.”
There are no feats except Gemitaiz.
«I don't like playing feats, records are personal. Berlin it was a single, it was less personal although true. I find it difficult to ask someone other than me to do a verse in a song where I talk about myself. I thought about Finley or La Sad and yes, I would do more songs with them but not on my albums. If I really had to choose someone, as a child I was a fan of Madman, Gemitaiz and Salmo. Only Psalm is missing…”.
The journey has begun but now comes the final completion, the Forum.
«I don't have stage fright, I've never had it. I hate waiting, I really hate waiting, and I hate waiting two months to do the Forum. I'll pass the time riding exercise bikes with the ladies. On stage I will do all three records in random chronological order. There will be guests, some who will sing and some who won't. Dobby will definitely be there.”
