“Remember when the pandemic forced us to stay indoors and in Italy people looked out the window and sang all together?”
With these words David Byrne introduces Italy Singsone of the playlists she loves to compile and share, this time dedicated to Italian music. It includes five pieces by Carmen Consoli (I wanted to be a rockstar, The slope of abandonment, Mother Earth, The usual things, Send us a postcard), as well as De André, Jovanotti, Paolo Conte, Franco Battiato, Avion Travel, Adriano Celentano, Domenico Modugno, but also Banda Ionica, Fabio Cinti, Chiara Civello, Marisa Sannia, Marco Parente, Pietra Montecorvino and others.
“Here is a wide selection of Italian singers, some recent and some not so recent, some traditional and some decidedly radical,” Byrne writes. “Many of them are or have been very popular in Italy, while remaining more or less unknown in the United States.”
And again: «It's a personal playlist, it reflects my tastes. It includes rock bands, opera singers, DJs, rappers, EDM artists and pop artists who have won the Sanremo Festival and have been at the top of the Italian charts for years. I focused on artists who have a unique sound, which perhaps could only have been born in Italy».
