“It is important to clarify that the case presented represents the only available course of action,” Yankee's legal team said of Mireddys González's divorce filing
A day after Daddy Yankee's wife Mireddys González filed for divorce after 20 years of marriage, the Puerto Rican star's legal team is standing by his efforts to save their relationship.
“My client holds deep respect for Mireddys González and is therefore prioritizing the preservation and protection of their privacy regarding their marriage and the personal matters that only they fully understand,” Yankee's attorney Heileene Colberg told Rolling Stone in a statement Tuesday. “For a long time, my client made unsuccessful efforts to reconcile their differences.”
Colberg said González was notified of her decision to file for divorce in September. “Private efforts were also made during this time but did not yield the expected results,” Colberg said. “Therefore, it is important to clarify that the case presented represents the only available course of action.”
Colberg maintained that their legal office would “fully adhere to the confidentiality” in the case, and asked the press for the “understanding and respect” through the process.
Yankee announced that the couple were divorcing in an Instagram story on Monday, writing that he spent “many months of trying to save my marriage.”
“This is not an easy time, but I understand that it is part of my life process,” Yankee wrote. “It is time to accept and move forward, and protect my stability, my children and everything built over so many years.”
Yankee cited his faith in Christ as his “refuge” and guide during this time, and wrote that he respected González's decision, and was grateful for their time “full of blessings, value, and love.” Yankee married Gonzalez, his high school sweetheart, when he was 17. They share three children: Yamilet, Jesaaelys, and Jeremy. Along with being his wife, she was his manager and the CEO of El Cartel Records.
