Ferocity, ferocity and still ferocity. The good Roman Saenko, a unique mind behind the work of the fierce Blackster Ukraini Hate Forest, has shown in numerous other projects, on all the famous Drudkh, to know how to manage more reasoned and melodic stylistic situations with skill, but this incarnation, with which he has signed authentic milestones of the genre in the past such as “Sorrow” and “Pury”. Mirror of his most across the Alongraist and Insecanist nature.
This new full-length, “Against All Odds”, is not in the least exceptions, the final act of the trilogy that began in 2023 with the EP “Sowing with Salt” and continued the following year with the EP “Justice”, as well as the first album of our recorded with a batteryer in flesh and blood (of which the identity is not given) instead of the usual Drum-Machine.
As always, the information regarding what concerns the work of the Hate Forest is issued with the dropper, therefore it is not clear whether the situation internal to their country has somehow influenced directly on the return of the band at full speed after long years of hiding broken only by the publication of split, demo and compilation; The fact is that, from 2020 onwards, the Ukrainians produced three works on the long distance and as many EPs, revealing a vitality and an expressive urgency that also in the present here “Against All Odds” can be felt evidently, from the explosive “Werewolves” Opener.
The black metal of ours is, as per tradition, relentless, icy, dark and without the slightest compromise; Even the hieratic acoustic detachments to which the band had accustomed us in the past have been completely set aside in favor of a constant assault, where the blast-beat leaves only rarely to solutions just less paroxysia and the guitars constantly grind ice riffs and mortifere melodies, all dominated by the wicked vocal lines, as always at times in growls, at times in the screen, of Saenko.
The result is a black monolith to say the least inscalling, which will delight the most pressing and fundamentalist Blackster, but which could be rather difficult to assimilate for those who, even in extreme music, still seek dynamics and variety of solutions: exactly the type of audience from which the Hate Forest seem to want to openly keep away, so it can be said that the result has been fully achieved.
The pure misanthropy, the unquenchable thirst for blood and the bellugal pride of songs such as “One Way Ticket”, “Ukrainian Thermopylae”, “The Reaping Hand” or “Courage” are gifts that the Hate Forest want clearly to give only those who primar one's contempt for everyone else. A hostile, brutal and uncompromising album; Black Metal in the purest and ferociously antagonist sense of the term.
