Jordan Peele produced the film, set to hit theaters in April
Dev Patel‘s directorial debut comes in the form of a bloody, violent revenge story as he punches his way through hoards of bad guys in the first trailer for his upcoming film Monkey Man. Jordan Peele is producing the movie through his production company Monkeypaw, and the movie is set to hit theaters on April 5th.
Monkey Man‘s plot sounds like your classic blockbuster revenge story; Patel stars as Kid, a young gorilla-masked fighter who throws punches each night in an underground fight club to make ends meet. His mother gets murdered by the city’s elite, sending Kid on a vengeful mission to bring justice to those responsible and to take down the system that’s preyed upon him and the rest of the poor and working class.
As the film’s plot line says: “As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.”
Throughout the trailer, Patel beats his fists bloody, gets in car chases, stabs enemies with broken glass and breaks beer bottles on gangsters’ heads. As one unidentified voice says in the trailer: “Just one small ember can burn down everything.”
The story is based around the legend of Hindu deity Hanuman, the Hindu monkey-human hybrid deity. Patel wrote Monkey Man’s screenplay alongside Paul Angunawela and John Collee.
The rest of the cast includes Sharlito Copley, who starred in District 9, as well as Sobhita Dhulipala, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma and Ashwini Kalsekar, Adithi Kalkunte, Sikandar Kher and Makarand Deshpande.
