Dev Hynes is returning once again to the film world, with the forthcoming score for Olivia Wilde’s new A24 movie The Invite. Hynes has also shared a song from the soundtrack, “Contentious Environment.” Give it a listen below.
A remake of the 2020 Spanish comedy The People Upstairs, The Invite follows couple-on-the-rocks Joe (Seth Rogen) and Angela (Wilde), who find their boundaries and dynamics of their relationship called into question after inviting their neighbors Pína (Penelope Cruz) and Hawk (Edward Norton) over for dinner. It’s Wilde’s first time back in the director’s chair since 2022’s Harry Styles-starring Don’t Worry Darling.
A quirk in Hynes’ discography is that he’s actually released more film scores than Blood Orange albums. He’s also behind the music from Paul Schrader’s 2022 thriller Master Gardener, Rebecca Hall’s 2021 historical drama Passing, Melina Matsoukas’ 2019 road trip flick Queen & Slim, and two Gia Coppola films: 2013’s Palo Alto and 2020’s Mainstream.
Revisit Stephen Kearse’s review of Hynes’ most recent Blood Orange album, Essex Honey.
