The track was inspired by nights out that just won’t end
Brothers Osborne follow up their self-titled 2023 album and last year’s Break Mine EP with the electrifying new rocker “Finish This Drink.” The song is a concise blast of funky country-rock, with shades of the Allman Brothers, some traditional-country fiddle, and lyrics about a bottle that just won’t empty.
“Out of respect, asked for the check/When I hear that long neck clink,” sings TJ Osborne, “Then my brother hands me another/as soon as I finish this drink.”
TJ and his sibling, guitarist John Osborne, co-produced the song together, recording it at John’s studio, which he’s dubbed Pine Box. TJ says the song was inspired by their father, Big John, and childhood memories of nights that didn’t end.
“When my brother and I were little, our dad would always say that he would leave as soon as he finished his drink only to be there for the rest of the night,” TJ said in a statement. After his own night out of “just one more,” TJ had the idea for the song over breakfast. “A few mornings later, I’m having breakfast by myself at Waffle House, and I just started singing the chorus to myself and I had to go into the bathroom to record the idea so I wouldn’t forget it.” (TJ ended up finishing the song with co-writer Alysa Vanderheym.)
“Finish This Drink” arrives as the Grammy-winning duo return to the road for a spring tour that includes festival dates at the March Madness Music Festival in San Antonio, Texas, this weekend, and a slot at Stagecoach in Indio, California, on April 25.
